"Drugmakers led by Pfizer (PFE) Inc. agreed to run a “very significant public campaign” bankrolling political support for the 2010 health-care law, including TV ads, while the Obama administration promised to block provisions opposed by drugmakers, documents released by Republicans show. "The internal memos and e-mails for the first time unveil the industry's plan to finance positive TV ads and supportive groups, along with providing $80 billion in discounts and taxes that were included in the law. The administration has previously denied the existence of a deal involving political support. "The documents were released today by Republicans on the House Energy and Commerce Committee. Survey: 99.5% of Hospitals Report Drug Shortages http://blogs.wsj.com/health/2011/07/12/survey-99-5-of-hospitals-report-drug-shortages/ The Institute for Safe Medication Practices has called the recent rash of shortages “unprecedented.” … The AHA says that 99.5% of the 820 community hospitals that responded to the group’s June survey reported experiencing at least one drug shortage in the past six months. A full 44% reported shortages of 21 or more different drugs. All treatment categories were affected, hospitals said, with 80% or more respondents experiencing shortages of surgery/anesthesia, emergency care, cardiovascular, gastrointestinal/nutrition, pain or infectious disease drugs. And 66% of hospitals reported shortages of cancer drugs. Some 47% of hospitals reported experiencing a shortage of at least one drug on a daily basis. |

In 2003 George W. Bush signed Medicare Part D into law. It forbid the import of cheaper drugs or the use of cheaper generics. The government has been required to pay full price to big Pharma. The total overpayment is approaching half a trillion dollars, which is about equal to the cost of the Savings and Loan bailout of the late '80s-early 90's that was needed when Reagan deregulated the banks and the crooks ran wild. But that is small potatoes when compared to the $4 trillion invasion of Iraq. A trillion here. A trillion there. Pretty soon you are talking real money. |
