Check this out. Apparently Cheserek did a 1k time trial and is looking to go well under 4 at the Dream Mile.

Is that a HS record for the 1k?
The article states he's gunning for a 3:53 (Webbs record) i'll bake dat chicken pie if Cheserek dood it.
can someone link the article, sight isn't loading for me
hahahaha...
Typical Letsrun. 2:21 doesn't mean diddly squat. What did Robby Andrews run in high school? Cuz he ran a 2:22. Did he break 4?
NO.
And Cheserek thinks he can go 7 SECONDS under 4???
this whole thing is a joke.
I say he blows up, crawls home in 4:01.x.
Good luck CheserLame!
Based on the fact that Ches ran 4:03 last year and a 1:49 800m a couple of weeks ago suggest 3:59 is in the cards, but there is no way he going to run 3:53. Webb's 3:53 was an alignment of the stars, perfect conditions, a perfect race and an absolutely gifted athlete. Until a H.S. miler has Webb type talent 47/1:47, we aren't going see anyone come close to the record.
Btw, Ches is a distance runner with decent speed, just looking at the way he runs, I doubt he could break 50 in the quarter. It would be nice to see him get the sub-4 out of the way, start getting in more long runs and focus on bring down the 10K record.
why is he listed with a birth date of 1/1/93? is that a joke?
Yeah, absolutely agree. I definitely see him running 3:58-4:00. I would be shocked if he ran as fast as Ryun (3:55.3) ... seems like Webb's mark is out of reach even for him this year. Hope we're both wrong though, it would be amazing if he did.
Also agree he's much better at longer races. Any chance he's running a 5k or 10k this summer?

His birthday from his facebook account is 2/2/1994...

1/1 is what you key into meet registration software when you are missing dob information. The IAAF has listed his dob as 94 for 3 years.
So you're saying a 4:01/1:49 guy doesn't have sub 50 second speed? Lemme tell you something, I know teenage distance runners that can hit 51 in the open 400 that have mile/800 PR's nowhere close to Cheserek's. At the slowest, he runs 48 high on an all out effort.
However, I agree with you on the statement about Webb. He may have been the most ranged, most talented mid-d runner to have ever lived. His range in 2007 was just amazing.. 27:2x as a workout? 3:46 AR as a solo TT effort where he had no one to push him?
i say he will run 3:59.3 if the conditions are similar to the time trial or just fast enough to win if not.
Lampron FTW
There's still no confirmation that this time trial actually happened. Someone posted it on LR, then someone reposted on tracktalk, and now it's been re-reposted in letsrun. Nowhere along the line was there any real confirmation.
he's 18 according to nytimes article:
i don't think he can run 3:55 or 3:53, but let's say he does it next year as a 19 year old senior. is that legit? and there are a LOT of kenyan/ethiopian guys who at his age have run much, much faster, so it's great to cause some excitement for the sport, but c'mon, it's kind of over-hyped.
There are not a LOT of guys that have fun faster then 3:53 if he would run that time.
Fact: There have been 11 "Junior athletes run under A. Webb's 3:53.43
Fact: Only 8 of them are Kenyans
he'll go 2:01.5 then 1:56.8 for a for a 3:58.3 mile

I'm sure they listed him at 18 after hours extensive research that went well, WELL beyond the reporter just asking him, Edward, how old are you?.

Yes a lot of kenyan/ethiopian guys HAVE run much, much faster at his age. But then, a lot of american guys have run much, much faster at his age, as well.
There's no way he's going to touch Webb's mark and I don't think he will touch Ryun's either. I do think he'll break 4 though...and he can definitely break 50 in a 400.
Next year I could see him around 3:55.
Bernie Montoya for the win. Comes from near back of pack to close last lap in 52.
