I was reading the recap on how Alysia Montano went 1:57, and it said that she went through the first 400m in 55, 600m in 1:25, and then 800m in 1:57. That effectively means that she was running 27/28/30/32, and would be the equivalent of a guy running 48/55 to hit 1:45.
This seems like absolutely horrendous pacemaking, and unless there's some fundamental difference between male and female physiology that says that they have to run huge positive splits, I don't see a reason for it.
Also, I'm pretty sure that Montano is not the only one who paces her 800s this way, as it seems be a widespread problem.
What are the athletes and their coaches thinking?
