I've seen some websites come up with www2..... What does the 2 signify?

Most likely the site has two or more servers. Different servers have different names. In many cases, they might be behind some sort of proxy or load balancer so that all you ever see is one name. e.g. http://www.example.com.

But there could be www2.example.com, www3.example.com, www4...

wwwx means a cloned mirroed data center, an exact copy of www content located at a different location. think redundancy.
