After 15000 miles and seven years, I am done with Nike Free 5/28/2012 2:57PM Reply | Return to Index | Report Post
I have put in 15000 miles on probably about 30 pairs of Nike Free running shoes over the past seven years with great success. After the typical big shoe company constant changing of a product, I can no longer consider them good anymore. First it was the 5.0's, now they have ruined the 3.0's. Time to move on. I have probably about 500 miles or two months left to find an alternative. Please help with suggestions.

I had the original ones and the only thing that needed to be changed was the durability of the heel counter. I tried on the next ones and they fixed that but went too far.

Nobody ever gave me free running shoes. Welcome to the world of losers who have to buy their own.

Saucony Fastwitch from a few years ago were my favourite shoes of all time. Then they go and fuck them up with a new design.

I use Kinvara now. But I only run 25 miles per week and would probably use a different shoe if I ran more mileage.

Lunaracer's maybe? They changed the design back to originals. Lunaracer 2's weren't bad, but didn't feel as fast.

If you mid foot or forefoot strike, go for the new balance 730's. If you heel strike, only god can help.

Thanks for the suggestions so far but I need a minimalist shoe that is not cushy like the kinarva, has no heel counter like newtons and pearls. Also, the go runs might be fine if not for the gimmicky sole. I am now thinking of starting my own company.

Hey no one said "5 toes"?

I'm curious, what's wrong with the Nike Free now?

I'm no expert, but did you look at Puma? Seems like "H-Street" was the recommended POSE minimalist shoe, and now they have Puma Faas (400 Bolt and 500).

If not any of these, here is a whole list of 17 shoes that are like the "Free":

New Balance Minimus range. Truly brilliant shoes. You can start with the new Free-like shoes they have just released, but really get into the Minimus Trail 10s. Miss out the road 10s - trails are perfectly good for road running. Then progress to road zeros and trail zeros. Best minimal range out there - no need to bother with naything else.

Do you find that the foot is too contrained, and it is too cushy?

I have been looking as well. Loved the V2.

Barefoot. The manufacturer will not change the design of these. They're adaptive, self-repairing, and directly linked to your brain via millions of nerve endings built in to the material. They are also waterproof, breathable, and ultra-light, with a built-in suspension and energy return system developed specifically for running. They've been tested for thousands of years over every kind of terrain that exists on this planet, natural and man made. In the worst case you may want to cover them with a few millimeter strip of flexible material. Also they are actually free.
