http://www.khou.com/video/yahoo-video/Honor-Student-Jailed-for-Absences-153847275.html This is a tough case for any judge, because other people might make claims and try to excuse the truancy. Watch the video, and tell me what you think about this case. |

What the hell, she stays up until 7am? She's living off of an hour of sleep a day? Bullshit. |

It is obscene that he sentenced her to jail. She is a hard working honor student, taking care of her family. You wouldn't want to reward that kind of behavior would you... |

Oh, and I forgot to mention that Asian women are also rarely obese. Yes indeed, Asian women rock! |

She broke the rules. What am I missing? |

I think she should be an exception, sort of like how you dont ticket someone violating a No Trespass property when they are trying to save someone in afire. |

If you do that, you've set a precedence for other similar acts that follow. Follow the rules: everyone gets treated the same, no matter what their situation. |

She's old enough to dropout of school, at least in georgia. Anyway, she's smart enough and has a strong work ethic and im sure she'll be successful in life with those qualities. What happens in high school (barring pregnancy or a serious felony) is just a small speck of dust on the whole grand scheme of things. In 10 years, when she's running her own business, one that the judge himself will end up using at some point, she'll have a good story to tell. Thats something i noticed about Asians. Their work ethic trumps any other negative quality and nothing holds them back from success. |

Yes god forbid educators and society in general get involved with students' lives, especially when they are working as hard as they can to stay in school and keep a roof over their heads. |

As it is legal to drop out of school at age 16, how can missing classes, while maintaining your status as an honor student, be against the law? Another example of a power drunk judge, quite possibly a racist too |

So you can't think of any possible scenario in which the rules would be bogus? |

25% of high schoolers don't graduate: http://www.washingtonpost.com/local/education/high-school-graduation-rate-rises-in-us/2012/03/16/gIQAxZ9rLS_story.html Don't a ton of these kids skip school? I didn't realize any kids got jailed for this. Or is it once you're 18 you are free to skip? |

Wow, that was really sad. Help the poor thing! Whoever said that people should be treated equal under the law without concern for their situation, well, that's not actually how the law works. Situation is always important. I'll bet there is some lawyer that could help her get this conviction overturned, so maybe it was good that it got some media attention. That judge was a d+ck. All that said I'm sure she will do fine in life. She knows what hard work is and she knows the value of education. |

It's purely about money for the attendance of students in the school systems. In Texas a student can drop out of school at the age of 18, but if they begin that year they must finish. The ISDs. (Independent School Districts) are all over truancy. Even if it is an example such as this. Each ISD has a truancy head who rarely, if ever, is open to "exceptions" For example, my daughter is a diabetic, and her fifth period teacher doesnt allow her to check her blood sugar in class. My daughter has to leave class, go to the Nurses Office to check her blood sugar. (the school has given her an open nurses pass) Once my daughter leaves the class, she is then marked absent by this teacher. So now she has too many absences in that class, even though she's only missed 5 days of school this year. We will also now have to go to court to answer to a truancy judge and explain the situation. In this case, I may wind up going to jail or fined! |

Sorry to break it to you but your daughter uses her pass to go smoke weed behind the school. |

Wow, that's crazy! Aren't there any 'disability' laws in Texas that says it is illegal to discriminate (in this case punish, because she is being punished) against people with disabilities? I guess it depends on the state but medical conditions are considered a disability.
