The costume looks weird on the fat cyclists.

Do you mean like compression socks, arm warmers, allergy masks, etc? Oh wait; never mind...

By "Costumes," I assume you mean the Lycra and spandex uniforms. The form and materials help prevent chafing and saddle soars. The designs and colors are actually encouraged by the DOT and cycling organizations as a means for safety. Riders are supposed to wear brightly colored clothing.

That's kind of like asking why Policemen dress up like a member of The Village People.
Every cyclist around my town thinks they're training for the Tour de France. I wonder if they cry when they find out the race started without them?

This is what I meant.

Every runner around my town thinks they're training for the Olympics. I wonder if they cry when they find out the games started without them?
Not talking about the walkers. I'm talking about the runners wearing the latest, bestest shoes. Arm panties. Compression socks. Whatever the newest fad is.

Ha! you wish. I never see any runners wearing the latest running gear. They're all in basketball shorts and cotton t-shirts. And anyways, isn't it just necessary gear? It's not like they went out and bought a $7,000 bike to ride around the neighborhood.
Unfortunately I am not fat, but I love wearing my cycling costume. The tighter and brighter the better.

Post of the day!
Compared to the cost of their bike, a little spandex probably costs jack.
As a group of people that generally gets made fun of for the clothing (or lack thereof) we wear practicing our sport, you'd think we'd have a little sympathy for cyclists.
Someone should call out football players - spandex capris, how do they get away with that??
I hear you. I'd rather wear this guy's outfit.

Go for a 60 mile ride in jeans shorts and t-shirt and see how that feels.
A lot of biker riders are part of a bike club or team and you get cheap jerseys that have team and sponsors logos on them.
I'm sure if Nike or NB sponsored your club and gave you a running shirt that you wouldn't be complaining.
It's also part of the culture. Like people that play bball in their Celtics jersey. Riders like to support their favorite riders/teams in the same way.

When you're actually out training for a significant amount of time (not this puss$y 5-10 hours that runners do), it helps to be comfortable.
Go train for 25+ hours a week like a real athlete and then come back and talk about training apparel.
Yup. Those costumes sure feel great after a fifty mile ride on a hot day. I found that out when I was 18 wearing shorts and tee shirt, never again. About two weekends was enough to convince me to invest in bike shorts, never looked backed on casual wear. Saddle sores and chaffed armpits and pecs. Padded bike shorts and a lite jersey are the marks of a serious bike rider. Only thing I don't like are the helmets but with these crappy road drivers I increased my AD&D insurance.
As I get older I consider taking up biking but I really dont think I could dress up like the current bikers do. They look like race cars to me with all the flash like they're trying to sell something. I'm waiting to see an STP or Valvoline sticker on one of them. It does really look stupid to me. I dont see runners as quite as bad but some runners do go overboard on some of their stuff too. I like to just strip down almost naked and run. Shoes, socks and a pair of shorts and I'm good to go. But then summer comes around and the shorts are just too hot to wear.
The real question is why cyclists spend $1000's to shave a few grams off a gear shifter while not worrying about the extra 30 lbs they are carrying around their waist.
Of course the same could be said for overweight runners in racing flats, but at least that is just an extra $70.
