Yeah that didn't look too good. He had no kick at all.
Why did he even ran that race while being injured ?!?!?! He will take down Farah @Pre anyway[if he will run]
You said the same about Webb. And guess what. He isn't done.
I didn't see where he started the last lap, but at the least he outkicked Choge and Alamirew and probably passed at least 3 others. Considering how far back he was, he probably ran sub 0:55 for that last lap. Hardly "no kick", especially if he's been doing little track work. Oslo will be the real test (I don't think he'll run Pre).

This just in!....Webb is done
Where Bekele is at in the beginning of the season is irrelevant. He'll take all the hate, then come around when it really matters and bury everyone with a punishing last lap. Just see 2009 WC. He missed two weeks of training the month before it, and guess what? He doubled in the 5K and the 10K and won both despite solid competition from Tadese (who ran a punishing last 2000) and Lagat, who's an excellent kicker in his own right.
You have to give Bekele some credit for getting out there and racing despite being so out of shape. I doubt Geb would have toed the line in similar circumstances.
The commentators did say though that Bekele's track that he's building near his home will be ready in a few weeks so maybe he hasn't been doing any speedwork as he doesn't want to damage his calf. Three or four weeks of race specific stuff and he may be good to go in the 10k.
Bekele should stay off the track as much as possible, only using it for training sessions.
Looking at the results if you didn't see the race you might think he's done but that would be jumping the gun.
The recap is coming. Gebrhiwet, the winner ran 54.35 the last lap. Bekele finished 2.8 seconds behind him. Bekele was not at the front of the pack when the kicking started.
So Bekele probably closed in 55 high or 56.0.
My main point would be, he was not running like someone trying to win this race. He was content to run in the back of the pack. Reminded me of a lot of Americans in 5000s in Europe. If the pace was too hot for him, that would be a concern but the whole field was together throughout so you can't say that with certainty.
No one had much at the end of this one. It was in rain. Choge was trying to win the thing and Bekele still beat him.
My take was Bekele was content to just run the race and kick from the back. He didn't care if he won. More of a glorified workout. His agent Jos Hermens runs the meet so I'm sure he got a nice payday regardless and he needs to get in a few races to sharpen up.
Lets see how he does in Hengelo.
The Olympics are 11 weeks away. The guy still has plenty of time.
How did you figure he is running in Hengelo? I don't see him among the contenders.

I see a lot of fairly specific splits for the last lap and a general outline of who finished in what place, but why hasn't anyone mentioned the final times?

Nate Brennan said he also was running there, but I don't see his name on the list.
I guarantee that Bekele will be there with a lap to go in the Olympic 10km.

I don't understand why anyone would think he's done even from the results. This is a huge improvement over his 3k, so i'm quite encouraged by that. He seems to be making big strides and wouldn't be surprised to see some big things pretty soon.
Is Bekele done? At the Olympics, he may be DONE RUNNING 25 LAPS BEFORE ANYONE ELSE!
Although if the Olympics were next week, Rupp and Mo would outkick him.
The guy who started this thread is also probably someone who is saying Ritz is going to medal. As a result, it inspired me to write this:
http://www.letsrun.com/2012/bekeledone-0519.php
Bekele's race today was better than Ritz's last night and everyone is so pumped for Ritz. Well guess what? If there is time for Ritz, then there is more than enough time for Bekele.
And Bekele didn't have two personal rabbits.
Everyone knows that to the typical Letsrun poster, the most important race of the year is the one run that day. It foretells all future development. Thus, not only Bekele, but Mary Pierce, Morgan Uceny, Jenny Simpson and Andrew Wheating are done. They are kidding themselves if they think they can make the team or medal if they can't pr on May 18. What the hell are they thinking!
