Been done a bunch of times...a runner in Illinois solo'd a 8:57 a few days ago.
It is impressive, indeed. One of many impressive performances this year. Yesterday, a sophomore in WA doubled at his district meet with a 4:11/8:59. .
In this thread: we all cite different high school times to make ourselves feel vicariously superior.
I was there too.
I had him at 69,69,68,59 high the last 1,600. I missed the 1600s as I was running a trail race but saw him hold on to win the 800 in the afternoon.
And he's only a junior
8:57 for the 3200 is only impressive if the kid was tackled in the process. Otherwise...YAWN...
From what I hear he's not trying to impress anyone right now. His main focus is the junior world's where he wants to beat some 25 year olds who forgot their age.

Burcham solo'd this as well. He was up 5 meters within the first 100 and gone from there. He had at least 150 meters victory.
For the benefit of other old farts, please note that a 3,200m time of 8:57 or slower is "worth" something over nine minutes for two miles.
In other words, these kids (who ran great, by the way!) with 8:57+ times did NOT run "sub-nine for two miles."
He also ran 4:08 and 1:54 in the 1600 and 800 the next day.
