Not going to be there, but a word of advice if you haven't done the course before: With some rolling, don't worry if you come off of your pace a little during the first six miles or so of the race (whatever's in the park). The last half, basically straight down a wide pancake-flat road, is simply made to hammer! When you hit the boardwalk, unleash all hell. Good luck! |

I'm running it to get a qualifier but actually shooting for sub 1:19, which would also qualify me for next year (they are lowering the auto-Q standard). So just under 6:00 for me, at least until we get out of the park. This is definitely a course to get negative splits. After the crest of the main hill in Prospect Park (5.25 miles into the race), it's all downhill and flat. As long as the wind is not from the south (it shouldn't be), you will be flying the last 5 miles. Just make sure to get there early and try to get into the first corral by like 620am, get near the front and never look back. With 18,000 people starting on a narrow 2-lane street, it should be quite the clusterf***. Just get me out of there ASAP! |

I ran the very first one back in 1981. Race had about 10,000 runners. We started on Ocean Pkwy, which is a nice wide 3 lane road. We only ran the last 1.5 miles of the race in PP Park. And we didn't have to go up the big hill in the North end of the park. Pete Squires won that race in a low 1:05 time, with Odis Sanders about 2 seconds back. I think it was 1:05:14 for Squires and 1:05:16 for Sanders. |

I'll be there tomorrow - I'm shooting for 1:19:59 or bust. I am a good momentum/rhythm runner so I am really looking forward to the blast down Ocean Ave - I'm getting giddy just thinking about it. After so many rolling hills slow races in Central Park, this one should be fun. Weather looks about as good as we could hope for mid May - depoint should be 44 at race time. |

I went over to scout the new start yesterday. It looks like mile 2 is probably good for a fairly accurate split-- the one-mile and two-mile marks are basically right next to each other, as that mile is a little mini loop up Flatbush, around Grand Army (which is a pancake) and back down. Obviously Flatbush is a pretty solid hill, but most of that mile is on the flatter portion. Otherwise, you really have to trust your rhythm and feel over the first seven miles, because the splits won't make a bit of sense. As others have said, it should be a perfect day, and the 7:00 start should be early enough to avoid the sun and heat that's coming later in the day. I'm pumped. |
