I love how every thread that Ventolin contributes to just ends up with him yelling at everybody who doubts his calculator. Guy's got quite a temper. For what it's worth, for the most part I do find his posts interesting but to speculate that Mutai could break the 10,000 WR off pure marathon training is ludicrous. I have no doubts he could go sub 26:30 with proper training for the event but to my knowledge Mutai's never even run a real world class HM time (though admittedly I don't think he's ever peaked for one). Ventolin, I think your problem is you're using the NCAA tables to equate Mutai's 27:27. Those tables are designed for American athletes, obviously somebody who's spent their whole life living and training at altitude isn't going to be as affected by the lack of oxygen during the race as an American collegiate athlete would be. |

moron nothing about a wr was mentioned posited was 26'10 - 26'20
This really is priceless. It is as if I wrote that Yenew Alamirew could run between 12:30 and 12:40 and somebody said, "Well, I don't think he's world record material," and I said, "Nothing about a world record was mentioned." You're beyond stupid. Why didn't you write between 26:17.54 and 26:20 if that is what you meant? |

Wait, so marathon training is ideal for the 10,000? I always thought that training like a 10,000 meter runner was. Maybe that's why I never broke 31.
I agree that this was one of the best marathons of all time and perhaps an indication he could cut it on the track. However, my point was we don't have a great idea of what Mutai can run for a half-marathon all-out since he's never tapered for one by itself. Obviously this is crucial to know if we're going to speculate about his 10K capabilities as there's quite a gap between 25 laps and 26.2 miles. there is no discriminator mentioned in the tables - chinese/eskimo/aborigine...
The tables don't discriminate on the basis of race, but they do based on experience at altitude. From what I understand, the tables were made by comparing the sea level and altitude performances of athletes who may have never even lived/trained at altitude before. Somebody like Mutai, who has lived at high altitude his whole life will be less affected by altitude because his body has adapted to it, and will this have a smaller difference between his altitude and sea level time. For example if Runner A who lives at sea level races the Kenyan Runner B in Kenya and they tie, should these runners ever race at sea level it could be assumed that Runner A would fare much better. |
