Is that how he normally ran? It looks like he's about to fall on his face.

Looks like what the sprinters do. Wanjiru must have been sprinting the end, and craning his neck to break the tape.
In this video http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_detailpage&v=8q8XAMhjeqw#t=229s you can see that he doesn't do that.

Hmm, I don't think so. From the pic, it looks like he is just entering the stadium. It appears he's out near lane 8 on the track, and the way the marathon finish usually works is that as they go around the track, they work their way into lane 1 as they finish.
He does seem to be quite close to the crowd. Is it maybe after the finish? I just noticed the cooler on the side that they usually have after the line.
That's the way Sammy ran.
He's practicing his landing....

You made me chuckle.
Everytime I watch that video it brings tears to my eyes.

ja, this looks like well after the race ended - during the victory lap. Just got him at a strange time, that's all.
Looks to me like a kid who grew up running barefoot.
After further research, it appears this is incorrect. The wikipedia article says the picture is of him entering the stadium and this picture

seems to back that up. He's so low to the ground because that happens when you're going around a turn like that at a fast pace.
By the way, how incredible would that be to come in first into a full stadium like that?

I agree. I consider it my favorite Sammy footage. The tunnel scene really says alot about him. No other elite runners would wave like that.
Yap. He's not falling but his trailing leg is almost in full stretch. His frequency will be higher than mine, but more than that his stride length might be double than mine (sry for tha bad english).

+1.
He read "Once a Runner" and took the part about "get down speed" literally.
POSE, baby!
The photo is of the farthest rear extension of that leg. That is why it looks so extreme.
This is usually that part where I try to draw a connection between this running technique and success, but I know that Malmo would get his panties in a bunch and burn this thread down, so I'll just stop here. I have to get things done today.
There is some connection between running technique and success but it's just that, a connection. People misunderstand that to mean good technique equals success or bad technique equals failure. No, it's just another thing that can contribute and it contributes a lot less than getting out the door and putting one foot in front of the other.
i know the true reason, he had to run up a small hill after the drive way before he got onto the track so that picture was probably taken right at or right after the hill
Love the big screen encouraging people to "CHEER!"
