Looking to travel to Vermont with family for a month this summer. I am looking for an area that has great trail running, hip vibe, water to kayak! Any suggestions?

Everyone in the Burlington Waterbury Stowe triangle will claim the obvious answer, but check out the south
Kelly Stand/ Grout Pond/ Stratton pond has nice trails and dirt roads, lots of little lakes , some really big reservoirs (Somerset is huge and no shore development), the CT and West rivers... Bratt is as crunchy as Vt gets (go to McNiells for Ducks Breath Bitter) and Bennington has started to get a vibe

Check out the Burke area. It has an extensive trail system set up with the Kingdom Trails. I don't think there is white water in the area but certainly lots of lakes and rivers.

North East Kingdom is your best bet for true rural VT.

Burlington area cannot be beat. You can easily day trip to Montreal if you want some hustle and bustle. Lots of good places for food and drink in Burlington. Lake Champlain is great for kayaking. Zillions of trails around.

You might also look at Brattleboro in the southeast corner of the state. Just as funky and arty as Burlington but smaller and more homey. Connecticut river is good for kayaking. Pisgah State Park has great trails.

OK, so maybe not "hip" depending on your definition, but:

They have tons of trails, a lake for sculling (they might have kayaks too), a pretty cool outdoorsy area. This link is for their camps, but you can run their trails for free and probably use their boats/docks for a small fee if you talk to them. Or ask about staying in their lodges.

Burlington is definately "hip" and a fun town. Running or riding around the lake is really nice and there is a little beach there too. But I have to agree with Hunted and recommend Craftsbury Commons. There is an adult running camp there for a couple weeks in the summer and a high school camp there too, but anyone can stay in their lodges if there is room. The food is great and there are a lot of dirt roads, trails and the lake is beautiful. You can rent canoes and bikes if you want and there is even a circus camp down the road for an afternoon of fun. There is a 1/2 mile horse track only about 40 min away that you can do workouts on.

you'll have a great time anywhere you go in Vermont. But I like the Burlington area with its access to farms, museums, Ben and Jerry's for the kids, apple cider mills and wine and cheese tasting

Can you reccommend a specific town or place to stay? Downtown Burlington? I am planning a Burlington/Champlain trip in Aug, and want good access to road biking and lake; swimming and trails a plus. Downtown is ok, but I would prefer a cabin or place where I can cook meals.
