Bernie Montoya wins the AZ Div 1 state meet 1600 after stopping to adjust his shoe after he got clipped from the back - near turn just after lap one. Winning time was 4:14.69. Comments?

According to the announcer this happened twice. Did this happen before?

Also I kind of lol'ed at how he literally stopped right in the middle of a pack to fix his spike while guys all around had to dodge him.

Last year Montoya also lost a shoe, but kept going and won in 4:12. His foot was severely blistered and he withdrew from the 800 later that day. I'm guessing he wanted the double and to save his foot this year, so stopped to put it back on.

Oh, and it was over 100 degrees. kid has great wheels and a TON of talent.

Agreed. Tons of talent - just a junior. He ran a 1:52 800, has already run an 8:48 3200 and a 4:07 1600.

Every time I've seen him race, he pretty much follows the same pattern - hangs way back in the mid pack, or even toward the back of the pack, then uses his finishing speed to win. I suppose getting the back of your shoe stepped on is a risk of racing that way. This is what happened both years.

Last year he lost the shoe on the third lap, and the pace at that point in the race was fast enough that he couldn't really stop and have any chance of making up the distance - so he just kicked the shoe off without stopping. I think this time since it was early in the race and even the front guys were doing around only 65 sec laps, he had plenty of time to pause - I counted 5 seconds - and then make up the lost distance slowly over the rest of the second lap. I thought it was really smart - some guys would have sprinted all out to regain contact and worn themselves out. He took his time and was back basically in the spot he was when he stopped by the end of the second lap.

I agree that he did take a big chance just to stop like that with guys in back of him. Could he have been DQ's if one of them had tripped over him? I don't know enough about track rules to know the answer.
Bernie is going to be great

And he DID go on to win the 800 later that day in 1:53.xx over a deep field, then run a solo 9:08 to win with ease the next day (after a leg on the 4x800).

The kid he beat in this mile ran 4:10 for the full mile at Arcadia to finish third (4:08 1600). Pretty impressive stuff.

He did not run his Freshman year of XC. He played football, had a great Freshman Track season, and the rest is history.

Can someone in the state of Arizona teach this young man how to tie his shoes, maybe double knot?

What composure for a kid that age.

Guy was just gliding with 300 to go. Soooo smooth, thanks for posting the video.
