Fam did an NPR interview in which he says that he has arthritis in his foot from wearing his sponsors shoes in 09-10. Poor dude may have what I have -- hallux rigidus, although you don't get it from a two-year period, more like a lifetime of wearing snug shoes. There is only one shoe that fits him in the world and he now buys it himself.

I wonder what shoe it is.

He never will, he is a steepler slower than Hurling but a 5k stud faster than Webb and refuses to run a serious 5k.

The guy revamped his diet and didn't even perform at a higher level.

He was sponsored by Adidas. They are tight fitting in the toebox, from my experience. Made for European feet.

He is actually slower than Webb at 5k but that is nothing to be ashamed of

I thought that shoe companies are/were in the habit of customizing shoes for their runners?

It would be interesting to hear more than his side on why he first stopped running for adidas, then Saucony.

I agree. Probably would be hard to get those sides, though.

I have a few questions.

Does he have arthritis in both feet, or just one?
As the OP noted, can that occur from only 2 years in the shoes?
He's a little Italian-American guy. Are his feet really any differant from "European Feet"?

If he has it in one foot, why doesn't he blame that on running the steeple? Maybe he got the arthitis from getting one foot wet all the time! It makes as much sense as blaming his shoes.

Didn't his skeletal winged foot always kind of allude to this?

What's the cure for Hallux rigidus?

Hallux rigidus has no cure, only treatments (e.g. ice, anti-inflammatory drugs). I'm not sure that's what he has -- I have it in my left big toe and I have to ice immediately after every run, every day to keep it reasonable. Hurts. Probably caused by wearing snug shoes for 30 years of running. Now I'm one of those "big toe box" people.

Curious to get more details on Fam now that he's out of the bag.
