Steve Magness is definitely a crappy coach. He bases all of his stuff off of studies, but I've come to realize that the studies don't take into account so many variables, they're sometimes worthless. Def the best coach for OLionaird is Rowland. Plus he can get some good speed training in with Renshaw and Symmonds, Wheating and Brown. Rupp Farah and Salazar is probably the weirdest trio ever. Farah seems awesome, but Rupp and Salazar are so weird, its like they're robots or something. Put that with a boss irishman who loves to drink and its probably not a good formula.

Well it sounded like he came thinking Salazar would be coaching him and then he ended up with Magness who seems like a good guy but has no real experience.

He is also much younger than Al's group and not wound as tight so I am sure they weren't all going out for a pint now and then which he will be able to do in Eugene.

Does Salazar actually coach anyone besides Mo, Galen, and possibly Ritz? It sounded like Kara left the group because basically Salazar was never around.

I think she said she left because she didn't have any women to train with after Amy Begley got injured.

Ask yourself, would he have been able to get a Nike sponsorship and into Rowland's group without being with Salazar first?

I think his agent did that for him.

The bottom line is that athletes are leaving. You don't see high level athletes leaving John Smith, Bob Kersee, James Li, or Clyde Hart like that.

When there's smoke...you just have to figure out what kind of fire it is.

AlSal only brings in other runners like Ritz and Webb et al. to be cannon fodder for Rupp. He only cares about Rupp.

BUT....BUT....STEVE MAGNESS IS A GREAT COACH AND KNOWS A LOT OF SCIENCE AND STUFF. STEVE WRITES 15 PAGE REPORTS ON WHY THE MITOCHONDRIA GO TO THE NUCLEUS AMINO ACID PEPTIDES IN THE CALF MUSCLE WHILE DOING 186 METER REPEATS ON A 3.5% GRADE HILL.

If you're talking about the Nike sponsorship: Ciaran got into AlSal's group by approaching him directly at the World Championships. I'm sure his agent did some minor negotiations but when you have a building on the Nike campus named after you, you don't need to beg for money for your athletes.

If you're talking about getting into Rowland's group: my point stands, if it was Ciaran's agent who got him into the group, he did so with an athlete who had already run under Alberto Salazar not just some Irish dude who ran a fast time.

Ooooh look at you with your edgy opinion. He absolutely would have gotten sponsorship from somewhere.

He ran 3:34 and was a World finalist.

Go back and read what I wrote, then read what you wrote, take a deep breath and think about it.

Still don't get it? The point is not that he wouldn't get a sponsorship from anywhere, as you're trying to make it sound. The point is that he wouldn't have gotten into Rowland's group straight away.

Listen it had nothing to do with Alberto

He never planned on being coached by Steve. He was. He never was into it. He wanted to be coached by a coach he trusted, and Alberto wasn't going to do it.

Why not? Rowland wouldn't want to work with a recent graduate with a 3:34 and Worlds to his credit?

I'm not exactly opposed to physiology stuff, but I think most of us would rather see a paper by Renato about how Silas Kiplagat ran 3:30.47.

Going off some things I've heard from pretty reliable sources, there's some shady stuff going on with OTC Elite, and it's not the bigger name athletes you'd expect. As much as I like a lot of their runners, I'm pretty skeptical of some stuff going on there.

If it's not the big name elites, who cares? I'm sure lots of borderline athletes try out PEDs, but that doesn't mean it's anything systematic. This whole "a friend of a friend told me that some group of people who aren't very good might be using" thing is pretty annoying. If you know something, say something.
