Ok so let me lay out what happened today on my tempo run.

I was running a 6 mile course that I run very regularly on the roads doing a tempo run at 5:50 pace. At about the 2 1/2 mile mark within two steps of running, caused by nothing I can think of, my mid back seized up on me and it felt like I got the wind knocked outta me a lil.

I slowed my pace down for no more than 20 seconds and then it kinda went away. I finish the tempo on pace. When I stopped I started to feel it again as I started to put on my trainers to cool down, felt it a little bit during the mile cool down. It has been bothering me all night at about a pain level of 7 or 8 (it hasn't gotten any worse throughout the night) anytime I move, but I can also feel it as I lay here in bed. I can also feel it more when I take a deep breath in. It doesn't matter what type of movement I do it hurts the same, so I can't find what is triggering it besides just movement of anything, arms, bending over, left, right. Doesn't really affect my legs What gives?

I've never had back problems before, I'm 23, okay form nothing professional and I wasn't doing anything I haven't done before.

Probably back spasms. It happened to me one day for no reason I can think of, then went away just as quickly.

Go get a xray. Could be a slipped disc. Pain 7-8 sounds serious. Go see a doctor.

took about 10 days to fully recover.

by day 6, i was lifting my knee trying to work through the knotted up muscle. not sure if that is what happened to you, but lower back pain can be attributed to a lot of different causes with the same symptoms.

Thanks for the replies everyone. I am going to see a friend of mine that does sports and deep tissue massages, let him see what he has to say, as the day has gone on, it has lessened in the pain a little, but still hurts when I move.

Its not my lower back, definitely the middle, which makes this all the more confusing!

I'll post again for an update this evening.

x-ray's don't show slipped discs, and discs don't really slip because they are adhered to the vertebrae through special fibers. They can herniate and rupture bu not slip. That said, without leg pain, disc issues are unlikely.

What is likely is muscle spasms. They typically take about 3 days to start getting better. Use ice for the 1st 3 days. Stay lightly active, ie. walking around, don't stay in one place for too long, stretch your hamstrings while lying flat on the floor and put your heels up on the wall. Lie on your back and bring your knees to your chest. After 2-3 days you will start to feel better, and it may take 2 weeks to completely go away. Don't fall into the trap of staying in bed. Therapy helps, massage, ART, myofascial release. I wouldn't waste your time with these during the first 3 days as the normal inflammatory/spasm cycle has to run its course and they will only offer temporary benefits. After 3 days though, definately get some soft tissue work done, switch to heat, maybe get some adjustments if you are comfortable with that.

back spasm for sure. i had the same problem when i bumped my mileage to 70 mpw getting ready for xc.

Now looking back, I had intermittent back problems since then for the last 22 years. You could have weak back muscles. You have to do some strength exercises for your lower back. Not too much but even a little bit helps a lot.

BTW, don't worry about it. Some bed rest will calm the spasm down quickly.

That's a back spasm. Warm baths work well to relax the muscle tension. A few days, a few Advil, and you'll be fine. These are helpful also:

Ok everyone,

Went to see a friend of mine that I know very well and does athletic rehab massages, deep tissue stuff, etc. and let him palpate me and rub down. He said its more than likely, according to the palpation and my symptoms just a little pulled muscle and just tweaked it. Specifically he said it was the Multifidus and my Lumbar Quadradis.

Nothing serious he said just take a few days off and ice it after getting the rub down today, it'll work itself out. He specifically said it was not a muscle spasm though. Thanks for all the advice and tools. It sucks because I was gonna run a 5 mile road race this saturday. Still might just depends on how I feel Friday night/Saturday morning.
