For whatever reason my coach thinks i need to triple in the 800, 4x8, 1600 or 3200. I've done this before for him but ended up running 10 seconds off my PR in the 800. The 4x8 and 800 are the only events I really can place well in, but he insists i run in the 1600 or 3200. If its not possible to get out of this what are some good ways to get a full recovery for my open 800? |

run 4by 8 then open 8 then 2 mile. This way the 4by 8 will get you warmed up, it should not take much out of you and the 2 mile is the last event..you should be fine for the open 8..suck it up |

I would often have to do the 4x8, mile or 8, 2 mile, and 4x4 in HS. It's very possible in the short term, but I don't think it's healthy for long term progression. |

running 2 800s a meet is a great way to burn out in HS or peak early and far off potential...I hate coaches like that, he probably just wants to score points, although its best for the team it is not for the individuals, and if you really dont want to and they make you(like my coaches make me) then express your self, if its further ignored yer kinda screwed. Since its almost summer you might aswell just focus on resting after state and running summer track. |

Ask to be the last leg in the 4x8, so you only have to run as fast as you need to. I was asked to triple all the time, and quite frankly, my 3200m time was faster than my team's 4x8 time - with me running in the 4x8. The 4x8 is all about points and qualifying for state (since some of the other runners aren't able to qualify on their own). Just talk to your coach and ask him which of the three races s/he wants your best effort in, since it can't be all three of them. |

You generally don't get to pick the order of events at a meet. |

PICK THE RACE YOU CARE ABOUT AND JOG THE OTHER TWO. I once ran a 4x800 split of 2:34, 3200 in 10:19 (SLOW AS HELL BUT FAST FOR ME). Then ran another 2:20. Next meet I ran 4x800 split of 2:29, 1600 in 4:32, 800 in 2:25. Catch my drift? |

I don't know Lilly Williams. I did once know a Lilly though. She was cute. Wonder what she's up to these days.. |

Your coach doesn't make sense... especially since NOBODY is actually receiving a benefit from this. According to you, you can't actually place well in the 1600m or the 3200m, so whether you run it or not should not affect your team score. Additionally, anyone who argues that tripling at a meet is actually good for long-term progression has no idea as to what he/she is talking about. I don't know if your coach thinks he's helping you by doing this, but the bottom line is that he's not. If this is happening at duel meets, then the amount of damage you're taking in the 1600m/3200m will far exceed your recovery ability. |

I quadrupled a couple invites when I was in high school and had a blast. Started off with the 4 by 8, sat and kicked in the mile, and got outkicked in the half. Since only the 220 was between the half and 2 mile, I had to start slow while catching my breath and then moved up for another win. As the season progressed, I dropped the half, then our 4 by 8 didn't advance and finally I dropped the 2 mile/3200 and just ran the 1600 at the state meet. (Back then most schools were just converting to 1600 and were still running mile during the regular season. What was comical was that I won 3 out of the 4 events but the headlines in that towns paper was that their runner (who beat me in the 880) got "upset" in the mile. |

I honestly didn't realize how uncommon it is to run 3 or 4 races a meet. I ran 3 or 4 distance events almost every meet in HS. I was also toast by the end of most seasons and stopped running competitively freshman year of college... |

Just run them as a frickin' workout, dummy. |

You honestly need to just suck it up and do it. If you were to do a workout of ~3.5 miles with 2 periods of long rest, I'm sure you would be fine. This is a meet. Your attitude is detrimental to your team as a whole, as well as yourself. The longer you construct crutches for yourself as to why you cannot accomplish things, the longer you will not truly succeed. This is silly, just run the races and move on. |

I often ran the 3200, 1600, and 800 in HS. I keyed on one race and ran what I could in the others to score points. It was a great progression towards the end of the season where I focused on the 3200 for state. |

Not sure if you're replying to me, or the OP? In my case, I already did it. All that's in the past. Both my coach and I felt that if you lined up, you should race. So I busted my self 3 or 4 races a meet, every meet. I got through it. I actually enjoyed it. I'm just saying in hindsight I'm not sure it was the best thing for my development. Not that I was ever going to be anywhere near world-class anyway. |
