Duane Solomon over the weekend ran 45.98 in the 400 which is a world class time for 800 meter running standards. He ran 1:45 already this year and seems poised to make a run for 1:44 low this year and a spot on the olympic team. What other 800 meter runners in the US are capable of running in the 45's in the open 400? |

That's pretty serious speed. |

That's impressive running but isn't he a 400/800 guy? So if he hasn't got that kind of speed he doesn't really have anything. That speed for a 800/1500 guy = Olympic medal |

The only two other guys in recent 800m comps that I can think of are Matt Scherer (45.19 and 1:46.11) and Jonathon Johnson (45.94 and 1:44.77). Both r I'd like to see Duane make the team this year. He's had a good few years and has always had the quicks. |

I hope the team is Symmonds, KD, and Mike Rutt. But I hope Mike Rutt or KD wins the trials. Symmonds is a cool dude, KD tries so hard he deserves to go, and Mike Rutt is an up and cummer. |

Duane, Robby, and KD are going to London 2012. |

first off-45.98 is essentially 46flat. he's a 46 400 runner. second off, almost every guy in the world who can go 1.44 and below can do that. the 45 first two digit handle makes him SOUND faster. don't get cute. |

Roger Bannister essentially ran 4flat. He was a 4:00 miler. The 3:59 made him SOUND faster. I hope nobody was getting cute. |

I would roughly put chances to the Olympic team at: Symmonds: 70% KD: 50% Duane Solomon: 50% |

That is very solid speed, but it isn't unreal by any stretch for a runner like him. It makes sense that Solomon is that quick over 400, as he has always been more of a 400/800 guy and his endurance is lacking. I saw him run the invitational mile at Drake a couple of weeks ago and he was way back in the pack, but that's alright for a guy like him. It should be a battle for those 3 800 spots. It seems like Symmonds is a lock, but with Christian Smith's surprise in 2008 who knows what will happen after him. Should be fun. |

Do you think Symmonds can run that time in an open? |

I'm no Ventolin, but my gut tells me that Solomon running 45.98 should be equal to about a 1:44-flat for him. My fear with Solomon is that, because of his lack of endurance, a race that goes out in 52-53 is going to wear him out as much as one that goes out in 50-51. It's in his best interest that the race is over as quickly as possible, because there are probably only 3 or 4 other guys that can run an 800 as fast. If they come through 600m in 1:19 (on schedule for around 1:46), that opens the door for the distance guys to be fresh enough to outkick the speedsters. I like Symmonds, Andrews, and KD to make the squad. Unfortunately I think Solomon is better suited to the Diamond League than USAs and the Olympics. |

I'm surprised no one has mentioned what the actual team will be: Symmonds Jock Andrews |

To be fair, 1 second is a bigger deal in the 400. The ratio of 45 flat to 45.98 is the same as the ratio of 3:54.30 to 3:59.4. So to Duane Solomon can run "45" in the 400 would be like saying Bannister ran "3:54.3" the first time he broke 4:00. It's a significant difference. |

QFE although I wouldn't be surprised if DS gets in there. All these young guys are so fast and have such great closing speed, I don't think KD will be able to lead from the front unless he plans on going sub 1:43 (which I highly doubt will happen). |

From UCIrvinesports.com [4/19/12]: "Jock also ran a 45.7 anchor leg on UCI's winning 4x400 relay that posted a season-best time of 3:09.89." I'd say that puts him in the same basic league as Solomon for an open 400m. |

46 flat with no significant mile credentials says 1:44 mid. There is a lot of 1:44 capable guys on the scene right now, but there is only a couple of guys who can manage the rounds and I have not seen anything yet to make me think Nick and KD will not take 2 of the Olympic team slots. |

Symmonds, KD, Jock, Andrews, Solomon, Greer, Loxsom, Martin, Primm, something like that order, maybe Andrews beats Jock or maybe one or two of them (Andrews and Jock) take a major step forward to the 1:43s this year. |

Anyone who is predicting the 800m team without even mentioning Tyler Mulder automatically qualifies themselves as being clueless. The guy has been owning symmonds in workouts and running great overdistance pr's. (Not to mention he just ran his fastest 800 opener ever, faster than last year when he went on to run 1:44). Look out for a 1:44 from him at oxy this weekend |
