Right leg is really tight 5/6/2012 11:32PM Reply | Return to Index | Report Post
Can anyone explain why this would be? Its most noticeable when i'm sitting down and if I extend my right leg and kind of bend towards it, it's really tight underneath my leg, like between my hamstring and upper calf.
I assume I have knots in my hamstring or something but I can't seem to find anything and i've tried stretching it which kind of helps but not really. My left leg on the other hand is completely fine so i'm not sure what's up. Also, i'm having some pain around my ankle that I can't find where its coming from. Thanks.

This is a positive sign for nerve root tension. Try sitting down, straighten out your right leg and then just bend your head forward without bending your back and see what happens. If this causes pain, definately nerve root tension. You can have nerve root tension for a variety of reasons, and your ankle pain may or may not be related. Time to go see a chiro or PT if this is positive.

hmm ok, can this be removed by a good massage by a therapist or is this gonna be a long term thing?

You didn't answer the question about whether or not flexing your neck caused the tightness to happen.

Maybe a good massage therapist could help but there is the chance that the nerve root tension is coming from something spinal, though not as likely as muscular. There are nerve flossing exercises you can do. If you google the term "Sciatic nerve flossing" you will come up with some sites that describe different methods. Here is one, there are other examples

It is also possible it is common peroneal nerve, so keep that in mind, though if you do the sciatic nerve flossing a common peroneal nerve problem may likely resolve. There are also books on it on Amazon if you want to not spend money on a therapist. I would find someone who does ART over massage therapy for this though if you do choose to have someone check it out.

The tight leg is likely far weaker in the gluteal region than the unafffected leg. You're also probably compensation in gait by waddling a bit, and aggravting the sciatic nerve, causing a severe tightening of the hamstrings.

Your right leg is fine. The problem is your left leg is too loose.
