Running Vacation 5/6/2012 6:22PM Reply | Return to Index | Report Post
I'm going on a long seven month job and when I get back my wife and I wanted to go on a quiet three week vacation and start putting in some serious miles. We have only ever lived on the east coast and we wanted go somewhere out toward the west.
My question is, does anyone know of any good lodging for a runners retreat out in somewhere like Albuquerue, Flagstaff, Colorado...somewhere? Something scenic, quiet, high altitude, with plenty of good dirt roads. Just looking for somewhere to do some great training.
Any help would greatly be appreciated. Thanks.

Mammoth definitely looks amazing. I'm just curious about the lodging portion of it. Are there any good cabins, communities, or resorts that are very runner friendly?
huh?

Yeah, this is key. I wouldn't want to vacation in Flagstaff in the winter.

Solid point. It would be mid September (the earliest) if I get done early or smack dab in the middle of winter (Dec-Jan timeframe).

+1 for Bend, OR especially if your running vacation is in September-October. Bend is a hidden gem with hundreds of miles of trails and every type of terrain you could ever want.

Oregon has always been on my bucket list. What about the winter months? It is more likely I will be going in Dec/Jan.

I was going to say Zap Fitness in NC, but maybe not in Dec/Jan.

Actually, Zap is a great idea! I know Ryan, one of the coaches. And it seems getting on a plane will be impossible now since I literally just found out my wife is expecting.

I lived in Alamosa, CO for a year. Its at about 7200 feet and offers some great running trails in and around Alamosa, Fort Garland, etc. Juma Ikanga trained there quite a bit years ago.

Dont be cheap and go to St Moritz, best place on the earth to travel-train. You will find good runners as swiss and italian teams train there in the summer

Bend is still great in Dec/Jan. You would probably miss out on some of the really good trails in the high mountains in the Cascade Lakes area, but still plenty of other good places to run during the winter.

Leadville Colorado is heaven on earth for runners in September/October. December/January you'll need cross country skis-but that's not such a bad thing.
