Apparently the OP didn't notice what happened indoors when Rupp tried that with Lagat. Same thing will happen with Bekele--he'll just sit on Rupp until 600m out.

Need I remind you that Lagat and Bekele are two entirely different runners.

I just want to say that no way a healthy, fit Bekele gets beat by Rupp, He won't get beat by anyone from anywhere when healthy and fit. The thing is though, is that coming off his injury, we don't know if he is in GOAT form. He might not be a medal contender this year. He's looking pretty good, but we haven't gotten to see what kind form he is in yet. That's part of why the PRE meet is going to be fun to watch. Will Bekele own everyone like in the past? Or will we see that he still has some fitness to gain back in order to win gold?
Let me save you the suspense:
Bekele runs a solid, albeit not great, race at Pre. He then goes on to pecker-slap everyone in the 10000m final at the Olympics. It will be fun to watch, yes, but it's already a done deal.
Thing is, nobody can match Bekele's ability to close in 51 or better. You just can't beat that off a solid pace.
there is little difference between them in an open 400
kennster :
51.3 / 1'47.6 -> 3'30.3 , 4'45.6 , 7'19.3 , 12'35.2 , 26'12.8
rupp last year as opening gambit :
52.0 / 1'49.2 -> 3'33.6 , 4'50.2 , 7'26.7 , 12'48.5 , 26'41.9
there maybe nothing between them in a slow 5k & if rupp drafts behind, he coud definitely outkick him

Hasn't Bekele stated that he can run a 49 sec 400m off his 5k/10k training?

Just hilarious.

Um, wrong. Lagat can, and has.

BULL. This sounds like the hype when people said rupp was finally able to kick with lagat in the indoor 3k. Rupp got smoked. Same will happen here.
I'd be shocked if Mo could hang with Bekele. Rupp has no chance. His best bet is hoping it is a slow race where Bekele can only put so much ground on him in the last 400. If he goes from 1000 out he will look like a fool and just pace Bekele to a faster time. Bekele is superior to any runner on the planet and Rupp is not even in the top 15 of 5k runners.

Leg speed v. lack of leg speed. That's what it comes down to.

I think Rupp could take Bekele in the 5K if he runs superb and makes a strong move from 1000 out. He absolutely cannot wait until the last 400. He will have to be on his game, but I think his chances are decent to good.
HAHAHAHAHAHAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA!

No argument here. Bekele says he can run 49 and 1:48. But of course, the mad professor knows better than the greatest distance runner the world has ever seen.

This!
The thread is a wonderful troll job by the way, the premise gets a 2/10, however the unexpected reception bumps it up to a 4/10.
I guess some people forget that Bekele has closed the last 5000m of a 10000m race, 10 seconds faster than Rupp's best time for 5000m. I know, it is a trivial detail ...
