I got a buddy to join track this year, he's not much of a runner but he wanted to lose some extra pudge so I encouraged him to try it out. He did alright, running 2:22 and he's a sophomore in high school.

Anyways he told me that on long runs his foot will fall asleep, only one leg, and about 2-3 miles into the run. But it doesn't fall asleep on him when we do track workouts that have even higher volume.

Any idea what this is? I'm just glad to get a kid out running and he is a little worried that he will have an injury and not be able to keep running.

How much of the foot? The whole thing, just the toes, just certain toes, the bottom? On what kind of surface are the long runs on. Which foot is it? Is he wearing track shoes on the track and road shoes on the road or road shoes for both? If you can answer these questions we might be able to better help.

Tell him to losten his shoe laces and see if that helps. The anterior tibial artery runs down the top of the foot and if the laces are too tight it will constrict the blood flow, which can cause the foot to fall asleep or otherwise get numb.
