In compiling a list of the top 24 10k times over the last 2 years to see what it will take to get in the trials, I realized that Ritz is sitting at number 26 with his 28:21 from earlier this year. If the trials were today, he wouldnt be on the starting line. Oh wait, he runs for Nike so never mind. Carry on everyone. |

That is only true if everybody with a qualifier declares for the 10k. You are right that he still has some risk though. How many fast 10ks will there be between now and USATF for Ritz or other people to qualify? |

And assuming he gets in with 28:21, he needs to run 27:45 at the trials to make the Olympics. |

I'm sure the incorruptible heads at USATF will just pull a goucher on him. Too bad, second-tier collegiates, should've been a bigshot! |

I think a guy who has run sub 2:10 for the marathon and sub 13 for 5000 has a better chance of qualifying for the olympics than a second-tier collegian. |

He'll get hurt any way.. doesnt matter. |

That's not how our system works. If that were the case we would just select the olympic team like AK.

i wasn't referring to who actually gets selected for the Olympic team. Just the runners on the fringe of being into the trials who have clearly run well in the past. |

I have Ritz sitting at 18, 19 if Chelanga gets citizenship in time. Maybe I'm missing something but I don't see how you got to 26. |

Meeting the standard should not be a problem for someone at Ritz's level; however, there aren't to many 10k opportunities leading up to London. Ritz could actually run the standard at the USOT, even if it is somewhat of a tactical race. |

USATF has a history of letting in runners to their championships on appeal who state a decent case. http://www.usatf.org/events/2012/OlympicTrials-TF/entry/qualifyingStandards.asp This is what can get him in: "The Men’s and Women’s T&F Chairs will handle all entry appeals up to 48 hours prior to the start of competition in each event. Thereafter, the Entry Appeals Committee, consisting of two Athletes Advisory Committee members, one Men’s T&F Committee member and one Women’s T&F Committee member will have the sole responsibility to handle entry appeals." So if two people above him drop out, he's in. Or if he appeals before the race and they like him (Nike wink) they can add a 25th man on the line. If wants in, he's in. All of the top 24 are in if they declare. Ritz can jump over someone who is 25+ on the list if the committee likes him better than someone higher on the list that finished outside of the top 24. |

Ritz is in a pretty rough spot at the moment. He'll definitely get into the race on an appeal, but no one is going to help him make it a 27:45 race. His own teammate will be hoping for the slowest race possible in order conserve energy for the 5K. Dathan will need to be in 27:20 shape or better to solo that type of effort. That said, I believe Rupp, Teg, and Derrick can all close better than him off a 27:40 race and anything slower. |

If there was ever a runner to let in with the B standard, I think it would be Ritz, even if he does jump people with a slower B during the qualifying period. If the US were like Kenya and just picked people, Ritz would certainly be on the short list of candidates for the 10000 based on his whole career and his potential. |

Finishing Instructor, the qualifying window for the 10k goes back to Jan 1 of 2011. You have to take into account last year's times as well. |

He could travel to Hengelo for the 10K at the end of May for an A times and he would have plenty of time to reover for the OT. |

Well, thank goodness we don't do it the way Kenya does. People should earn their way into the Olympics. |

Says he may run at Oxy or Oregon Twilight. Looks like neither one has a 10000 listed currently so maybe he is counting on the B to get him into the trials. |
