Collegiate 10,000 Record Progression in the 70s 4/30/2012 12:33PM Reply | Return to Index | Report Post
While digging up the all-time top 10 performances, I had trouble finding information on what the collegiate record progression was in the 70s.

In 1967, Gerry Lindgren had the collegiate record at 28:40.2. Seems slow, but only two years previously in 1965, Ron Clarke had just lowered his own world record of 28:14.0 to 27:39.4.

It appears that Steve Prefontaine did not run the 10,000 until after college, when he set the American record of 27:43.6 in 1974, just four seconds off Lasse Virén's world record of 27:38.35. Looks like he should have run that race more often.

So what were the records between Lindgren's and Gabriel Kamau's 27:36.20 in 1982? You'd think Frank Shorter might have made a mark, but he only ran 29:16.4 in 1969 for Yale, but that might have even been just 6 miles. Part of the issue might be that they seemed to run 6 miles rather than 10,000 meters a lot of the time in college at the time. Was that the case at NCAA champs too?

Here's the current lucky top 13:

27:08.39 Sam Chelanga (Liberty) 05/01/10
27:27.96 Cameron Levins (Southern Utah) 4/30/12
27:28.48 Sam Chelanga (Liberty) 04/24/09
27:28.64 Stephen Sambu (Arizona) 05/01/11
27:29.40 Leoard Korir (Iona) 05/01/11
27:31.38 Chris Derrick (Stanford) 4/30/12
27:33.48 Galen Rupp (Oregon) 04/29/07
27:34.64 Mohammed Ahmed (Wisconsin) 4/30/12
27:36.20 Gabriel Kamau (UTEP) 04/24/82
27:38.10 Gidamis Shahanga (UTEP) 04/24/82
27:38.50 Dathan Ritzenhein (Colorado) 04/30/04
27:38.60 Zack Barie (UTEP) 04/24/82
27:41.05 Ed Eyestone (BYU) 04/27/85

Some other times:
Henry Rono, 27:22.47 (1978) *After NCAA season*
Samson Kimombwa, 27:30.47 (1977) *After NCAA season*
Diego Estrada, 27:32.90 (2012) *Redshirted*
Boaz Cheboiywo, 27:46.47 (2003)
Shawn Forrest, 27:52.10 (2009)

Bedford held the WR when Pre ran 27;43, not Viren.

Fredericks ran 28;08 in 1972.

College races were primarily imperial distances (except for Olympic years) through 1975.

Virgin ran 27;59 at the '76 trials, which was after the college season.

This was an American record apparently set by a collegian, but it was in June so likely didn't count.

28:08.0 Greg Fredericks (Penn State) 06/16/72

Having trouble finding the collegiate PRs of Alberto Salazar and Craig Virgin.

So there was no progression? Lindgren's record stood until 1982?

You can't find the progression because collegiates ran 6 miles, not 10k.

Great, thanks. So were they the official collegiate records then? Collegiate 10,000 records were not listed among either of their accomplishments. I suppose because it wasn't as big as deal then, and their other accomplishments outshined it?

You can check this site out for old NCAA results, though it is rather spotty in areas. From the 1965 meet, here is some of what it says about the 6 mile, won by Doug Brown (Montana) in 27:59.2.

New NCAA Meet Record: Old record 29:37.8, Danny Murphy (SJS) 1964
New National Collegiate Record: Old record 28:21.6 by Jerry Lindgren (WSU) Bakersfield, June 11, 1965
Third Fastest Ever by an American (1. Larrieu, 2. Bill Mills)

After thinking a bit, I think those statements after the 6 mile results from the 65 NCAA mixed up 10000 and 6 mile times. The Murphy time from 1964 was 10000.

You can also look here for world times at 10000 through the 1970s.

Just change the 1971 to other years through 1979. I can't find the 1980 and beyond at this time.

As coach d mentioned earlier in this thread, Virgin's 27:59 at the 76 trials was a new collegiate record as virgin didn't graduate until the spring of 77.

I believe in Olympic years (1968, 1972, 1976) the NCAA champs were run in metric distances (1,500; 5,000; 10,000).

So it looks to me like there hasn't been much improvement. Rono goes 27:22 back in '78 and we're barely running under that 35 focking years later.

To be fair, that was also the world record. It's like if Bekele went to college in the U.S. and ran his 26:53.70 as a junior, a couple weeks before his 21st birthday on June 1, 2003. I don't think anyone would expect another collegian to top that, let alone the 26:20.31 he ran the next year, which could have been his senior year.

Thanks. Looks like in 1976 John Ngeno (Washington St.) beat Craig Virgin (Illinois) in 28:22.66 to 28:25.52. It was a new NCAA meet record, breaking John Halberstadt's (Oklahoma St.) 28:50.3 from 1972.

In 1977 Samson Kimombwa (Washington St.) beat Virgin (then the collegiate record holder in 27:59.4) in 28:10.27 to 28:22.48 for a new meet record.

In 1978 Michael Musyoki (Texas-El Paso) won in 28:30.91. Salazar was 6th. Bizarrely, Henry Rono seemed to have shot his wad in the 5,000 qualifying heat in 13:21 record time, then didn't compete in the finals. Samson Kimombwa was credited with the collegiate record of 27:30.5 from 1977, also a world record.

In 1979 Suleiman Nyumbui (Texas-El Paso) brought the meet record down to 28:01.30. Salazar was 3rd in 28:06.12. Rono's world record is listed as the collegiate record.

Wow, Pre's 27:43 was a world leader in 1974. Not only that, but he apparently ran it completely solo.

Virgin had the world-leader in 27:29 in 1980. That stings, as he probably had a good shot at an Olympic medal had the U.S. gone. Yifter won in 27:42.

Except for Eyestone and Lindgren, all the Americans on the list went on to hold an American record. This is encouraging news for Derrick. Although if Rupp lowers his record any more he'll have a tough job ahead!
