Hey All, Post-collegiate racing my first fresh 800 of the season as my next race and I want to know what I should go out in. I am really more of a 1500/5k type, but I have been focusing a little more on speed this year. I already have run 3:52 and same-day doubled back in 1:55 (which was a PR). I just completed a 10x200 w/ 200m jog (60 sec total) workout averaging 27.87: 27.4, 28.4, 27.4, 28.2, 27.9, 27.9, 28.2, 28.3, 27.7, 27.3 What should my first lap be? What should I be shooting for? |

Try something around 5 seconds slower than your 400 PR. I think that is about the place that Peter Coe suggested. You have to run a few to find what works for you. Fastest 800's of all times have had slower second laps. Got to go for it to see where you will end up. |

That would mean about 55 for me. I guess that makes sense. Any other thoughts? |

It all depends on your running style really, I'm a Highschool senior but i've met 800 runners that run around the 1:52-1:57 range. Most of the guys in that range usually ran about 1 second faster or slower their second lap. A 58, then 57 would be good. just wear a watch if it's legal |

That might be good if I was trying to run 1:55, but I have already run that on a double. Now a 55 first lap then 56 would be nice. Is a 1:51 in the cards from that workout? |

Well, what would you say your leg speed velocity is? |

That's definitely possible. Just warm up good and tie your shoes tight and you'll run it. That workout shows you can, just really pump your arms in the last 200 and keep your legs moving |

It's not really a predictor workout for the 800. Most solid 800 guys can run 200s off short rest until the cows come home. You obviously have great strength and some speed and from one of your comments above, it sounds like you've run 50.X or so for the 400. To me, that suggests getting out in 54-55 and then just making sure to stay strong through 400-600. Your 15/5K background will bring you home while the more 4/8 guys will be dying off, so use that to propel you down the home straight and I don't see why you can't run 1:51/1:52. Good luck and let us know how it goes. |
