In the 1971 USA-Africa track meet, Miruts Yifter blasted the next-to-lap demoralizing Pre. Then Yifter stopped having miscounted, surprising Pre, and everyone else, who didn't know what was going on. Pre won when Yifter did not go on. http://www.flickr.com/photos/thehappyrower/4306964448/ I recall that the excuse was that the lap numbers were in numerals that Yifter did not know, speaking Arhamic. |

Here's a link to the same photoset that explains why Yifter pulled up early. |

Hasn't Lomong finally earned the respect to have his name spelled right? It' a lot easier than spelling Gebrselassie. |

1971- when Yifter was only about 34. Miscounting laps is one of many ways to waste The Gift. |

Pre was cooked in that race, too. IIRC his last lap was a 70--if Yifter had gotten going again, Prefontaine would have been dead meat. |

I thought the same thing when I saw the video of Lomong! Amazing how old Yifter looked even in 1971. |

Pre was cooked because it was Durham, NC in JULY. |
