Last night I was flipping through the channels and came across "Rent" on TV. Wow, is all I can say. Truly the most cringe-worthy foolishness I've seen in quite a while. But that got me thinking, how can people actually enjoy the genre of "musical"? My entire life, I've been amazed at how absolutely ridiculous musicals are. Right in the middle of some interesting dialogus, they just break out into singing. I've just never "gotten it" |

Have you seen "The Sound of Music"? You should see that before you totally write of the genre. People have different tastes though. There's certainly nothing wrong with not liking musicals. Whatever floats your boat. |

I have seen it. And yes, I admit that a lot of the MUSIC ITSELF is quite good. But I've just never understood the concept of a musical. I can accept the most outrageous concepts for Sci-Fi or fantasy films or whatever, but this business of just breaking out into song is just weird to me |

I always took it as the narrative having reached a point where the characters couldn't express themselves in words, so they turned to music. So the music is sort of highlighting the characters' (of perhaps the audience's) feelings. I could certainly be wrong about that though. If they sing the whole time it can sort of f*ck up the effect. |

Well you have to look at the movie as entertainment - not reality. Find enjoyment in the talents and skills of the musicians and dancers involved and look at the movie as storytelling around the songs. That being said, I feel like My Fair Lady is the best musical for appearing more natural in its delivery of the songs. |

I agree, I've never enjoyed musicals, and I have a music degree and have taught music forever. Pretty much hate musicals, though. |

I can't imagine enjoying the genre as a whole, but I did catch this movie called 'Once' and liked it. Probably because of the style of music (Irish folk/rock). When they broke into song it seemed natural in the context of the movie. |

Depends which musical you go see. I used to go see CATS! it was filled with hot lithe 20 something babes. since the male cast members were 95% likely to be gay, the women were very approachable and I actually ended up dating one. Hot hot hot. |

Makes sense. I would imagine that a musical about the Welsh or Maoris wouldn't be that much different from their everyday life... |

Truly the most cringe-worthy foolishness I've seen in quite a while. I mean, it's just round and round they go. Mostly names that I can't even pronounce. But that got me thinking, how can people actually enjoy the genre of "distance races on tv"? My entire life, I've been amazed at how absolutely ridiculous long distance track athletes are. Right in the middle of the prime of their lives, they obsessively run their injured bodies into the ground, wear silly clothes, look like they've come out of auschwitz, and perpetually talk about nothing but splits, training, and running dialogues. They just break out into ridiculous discussions about mileage run, what shows they think are the best, and spew negativity regarding a recent star performance from another athlete. I've just never "gotten it". They seem to be the geekiest and most boring people on the planet." Everything is relative, isn't it? |
