So sad for her family, friends, and fans. My heart goes out to them. We in the running community--whose members often have mental-health issues of their own--can draw a lesson from this: It's hard not to respect someone's privacy; but when you can see that a person is on a downward slide you have to respect her or his *life* more, and be willing to make a phone call. |

Are you implying that there was a mental health issue behind the "medical emergency" referenced in the release? |

Yes. In an otherwise physically healthy individual, my presumption is that a suicide attempt (that was eventually successful) is a sign of a mental-health problem. I could be wrong about that, but from comments made by her fellow/sister students it's pretty clear that there were "issues" that others recognized but did not do much (or at least: as much as they would have liked, in retrospect) to act upon. It's terribly sad. She was only 19. |
