My math teacher gave us this as a word problem. Is this appropriate? 4/28/2012 8:39PM Reply | Return to Index | Report Post
"Men have always preferred to date younger women. The minimum age of a woman that a man can hook up with is given by the formula 'one half his age plus seven.' For example, the youngest a 30 year old man can date is 22. How old must a man be to hook up with a woman 14 years younger than him?"

I'm a junior in HS by the way.

If you're a collegiate college coach this rule does not apply.

And everyone knows this rule was created by older women who still want to have their hole(s) filled.
Really????????????????????????

Despite the inappropiateness of this as a HS question the rule holds remarkably true:
14 - 14
16 - 15
18 - 16
20 - 17
22 - 18
24 - 19
26 - 20
28 - 21...
36 - 25
40 - 27
50 - 32

Reminds me of a funny Spin City quote, "Happy birthday, you're 30. You can can sleep with college girls AND their mothers."

Are you are a junior in high school and taking what appears to be elementary school math? This question is not at all appropriate in terms of difficulty for a high school math class.

Seems about on par with the inane topics I might expect a public teacher to discuss in the classroom. He must be getting mentally prepared for his upcoming 4 month vacation on the taxpayers dime.

Is your teacher 14 years older than you? Are you the only one who received this word problem? (I guess I should also ask if you're female). If all of the answers to these questions is yes, you should report this teacher.

Don't be that jackass who rats on the teacher for something stupid like this. If you're offended by the question then I have to ask what high school you're going to, the average banter between students is far more vulgar then this.

Your handle should be "troll so hard". I'm sure a HS teacher would use "hook up" in a question.

I'm a public school teacher. I'm guessing you're not and never could be. I typically work 12-15 hours daily teaching lessons, planning, gathering materials, holding extra study sessions, talking with parents (many of them certifiably nuts), etc. It's much tougher than you'd think, particularly since we have to tailor lessons to meet the needs of individual students. There's no one-size-fits-all lesson, and everyone seems to have an IEP. The "four month vacation" of which you speak lasts about 2 months. I'm guessing you're gonna vote Republican, right?
