5000m vs 3000m 4/28/2012 6:04PM Reply | Return to Index | Report Post
Why do we have the 5000m at major championships? I'm fine with the 10k because we need a true long-distance event but the gap between the 1500m and the 5000m is huge. Generally speaking it is more common to find 5000/10000 runners as opposed to 1500/5000m runners. Short of a few legends like El Guerrouj and Lagat who were able to bridge this gap the general trends are for 800/1500m runners and 5000/10000 guys.

So my question is this: Why do we not have a 3000m race instead of a 5000m one? I genuinely think it would be more interesting. I suppose people will mention the steeple but really, who cares about that?

well the steeple guys care for one things. and the steeple is the exact reason we dont do 3000m, its pointless to do two races of the same length and the only difference being there being barries in one. itd be like going to an invite and watching the heats in the 2 mile go from fast to slow. you watch one fast and a good race in the first section, then when the unseeded guys come up it ends up being pointless as you already saw the same thing, only difference being the first one was faster.

steeple is entertaining and all, and not trying to bash the steeplers, but watching a 3000m flat then later watching a steeple race seems pretty pointless. besides, we do 3000m indoors

Really if you think about it, the championship events should be:

100, 200, 400, 800, 1600, 3200, 6400. I could maybe understand doing 5k and 10k just for the sake of round numbers ( and for not having to do a 12800 for the true LD specialists) but 1500 and 3000 are just silly.

Or if you want true nice numbers then 100, 250, 500, 1000, 2000, 3000, and so on. You can't pretend like 250m is a bad idea and then go and endorse the 1500.

I'd be quite happy to swap the 10k for a 3k. I'd swap a 10k for anything tbh that shit is boring as hell.

Could become:
125, 250, 500, 1000, 2000, 4000, 8000
if the track were 500m around instead of 400m. This makes more sense if we are basing our distances on the kilometer.

There isn't a great reason that I can think of that they do not have a 3K, 5K, 10K, 8k XC, 12k XC , road half marathon, full marathon, and 50 mile trails race at the Olympics and the World Championships.

If you look at swimming as a model, there are a ton more races in swimming. "Okay now we will swim the same distance but this time on your backs. Oh wait no you can only use the breast stroke this time."
