I might be moving to NY and I'm just exploring the possible places within my budget. I was looking into Brooklyn but the running options aren't very good. Most of the places in Manhattan are too expensive with the exception of Harlem. I like that it's reasonably close to CP which is good. It seems to have a bad rep though. Loud music, rat infested, crime ridden are some of the things I read about. Is it really that bad? |

Live in Bayonne, NJ and take the PATH train. |

well it got a bad reputation in 1964 and 1968 as there were riots, it has really improved since then, it is about 54% black, 34% spanish, 2% asian and 10% white and they all live happily there. the new york city marathon runs through it. a couple of regulars at a coffee shop in harlem are bill and hillary clinton, any place that is safe enough for a former president of the united states and his wife, is safe enough for anyone. |

Well, Harlem is the only place that would accept William and Hillary Clinton, if that tells you anything. |

PATH does not go to Bayonne, NJ. You could take the light rail to either Hoboken or Jersey City and get the PATH from there, though. That said, Hoboken or JC could be doable choices that are cheaper than Manhattan, but the running is pretty sucky on this side of the Hudson. |

If you are moving to NYC and you are a runner on a budget, Harlem is THE best place to live. Closest you will get to Central park without paying over 1000 per month. It is not dangerous at all. |

Depends-what side of Harlem are you talking about- and how high? The area close to the upper west side isn't so bad but East Harlm is the pits. Also, what shade is your skin? These details do matter. |

Harlem is really not so bad compared to Detroit, Baltimore, or Oakland. |

thanks. Can you give me some advice on what parts to avoid? East Harlem, Morningside heights?? Spanish harlem? |
| guess what |

I can pass for spanish. I think I'm willing to go as high as Washington heights. |

Not everyone has Secret Service protection. Morningside Heights is a great pocket. |

Yeah, a great pocket of Columbia University- gentrified neighborhoods. Good luck finding an apartment if you're not an enrolled student! |

Sounds like morningside heights might be good. What's the next best nabe on the list? I guess E. Harlem and Inwood would be at the bottom? |
