El G? KB? Lagat? Geb? It's about time to put this to bed. Give us your choice. Back it up. |

In my mind, there are four legitimate contenders - Haile Gebrselassie, Kenenisa Bekele, Hicham El Guerrouj and Sebastian Coe. |

kenenisa bekele will be NO DOUBT the best if he wins London. |

Lagat is definitely ONE OF the GOAT but absolutely not THE GOAT. The other 3 are to close to call imo. Let's see what Bekele has left first. I don't think I've seen anybody be harder to beat that KB |

Jose Luis Escamilla even though he has recently been injured with a bum achilles. He is currently in Mexico gaining much strength and ready to take the gold medal in the 5k 10k marathon in London for MEXICO. Mark my words, he will win it all. |

Said Aouita. Hands down. What other athlete could even think of being #1 in the world (Per T&F news) in the 10,000 one year, and the 800 in another. To say nothing of WRs in the 1,500, 2,000, 3,000, and 5,000. First man under 13 minutes. First man under 7:30. OG in the 5,000 and then comes back 4 years later with a bronze in the 800. GOAT |

Sebastian Coe doesn't belong on this list. By default he will ALWAYS lose to El Guerrouj. |
| tommy wants to play too |

Henry Rono most be mentioned. Short career but so far beyond what anyone else could match when he was on. |

Not over 1000m or 800m. Also being the GOAT shouldn't just be determined by times or else the discussion is simply which is the best world record. |

Sebastian Coe doesn't belong on this list. By default he will ALWAYS lose to El Guerrouj.
Two Olympic gold medals in the 1500, two Olympic silver medals in the 800, multiple world records, and would be a gold medal threat in the 800 and 1500 in 2012. He absolutely belongs on that list. |

Agreed and I vote Geb.
Depends on what the OP means in his original question! It isn't very specific. Does he mean GOAT athlete ever? best distance runner? middle distance runner? etc. I think a lot of the names mentioned probably are the GOAT in specific categories. GOAT "middle distance" (classically 800 - 1 Mile) - Coe GOAT Miler - 5000m - EL G GOAT "long distance track runner" (classically 5 & 10k) - Bekele GOAT range over middle & long distance - Aouita GOAT overall distance runner on all surfaces - Geb. |

Sebastian Coe doesn't belong on this list. By default he will ALWAYS lose to El Guerrouj.
Someone who broke more outdoor world records than EL G, Lagat & Bekele put together doesn't belong on the list!!? Coe won 2 Olympic golds at 1500, EL G won a gold and silver from 3 attempts. Coe broke the Mile WR 3 times, EL G once. |
