800m summer training:Train stregnths or improve weaknesses? 4/27/2012 12:35AM Reply | Return to Index | Report Post
I'm a 20 year old 800m runner with a Pr of 1:50. I've always had good basic speed but not blazing, 400m pr is 48.8, but have never been very strong aerobically or done much base. Last summer I mainly tried to put in some miles and got to around 40-45 mpw but did not see the improvements that I had anticipated. My question is being a bigger 800m runner at 6' and 175-180 lbs, should i work to improve my speed and 400m time this summer or work solely on improving aerobically. I always thought I needed more aerobic work but maybe if I worked on my speed instead I could lower my 4oom to 47s which i think would really benefit me as well. Any help with summer training or what I should focus on work be great. Thanks

I am not nearly as fast as you, so feel free to ignore me, but here it goes. Why not do some of both? You are coming at the 800 from the quicker side of the event (I'm assuming you started off as a 400 guy), so I don't see why more miles wouldn't make you better. Try to work up to 45-50ish MPW for an EXTENDED period of time. You can and should do some faster work (strides, 200, plyos/weights) while working up to this, but focus on getting in the mileage. Once you're comfortable with the mileage, do more 800 specific work. Don't neglect tempos and endurance intervals, and keep up your speed with some 200s and 150s.

Do you have a coach? If so, you should talk to him before relying on what letsrunners have to say. Good luck.

Both

During base, emphasize your weakness while maintaining your strength. During the season, emphasize your strength while doing enough to maintain in your area of weakness.

For a speedy 800 guy (sounds like you are a 400/800 guy), aerobic conditioning doesn't always mean you need to go out and run long slow miles. My 400/800 guys the last couple of years have been doing lots of tempo intervals, circuit training, and short reps with short rest as a method of developing aerobic strength. This seems to be working for us as we have seen a really nice improvement in those two events.

glad to hear you made that strategy change, coach B.

OP you need to get some speed development to reach 1:48 or below. 40/week is plenty and fartlek or some varied interval pattern will bring the best results. sounds like you want to point towards 46.5 relay / 1:18 600m.

strengths and weaknesses are arbitrary. do I have stamina to run a great 800 if I can run 10 miles in 50 minutes but
zero stamina at 50sec 400m pace?

You sir, are a skinny, weak, idiot. I have a 1:51 pr at 175.

Stop taking good threads off course.

Thanks for all of the replies. Right now the school I run for is hiring a new sprint/mid d coach so I don't have a coach to give me a summer plan.

I'm glad to see most aren't into just getting in long slow miles as I havent seemed to benefit from that in the past. I know my aerobic capacity needs to improve and summer is usually used for base work but I've always felt that when my 400m time drops I see big improvements in my 8.
