Well freshman year of Hs has come and went and I have a kid who is hard core lacrosse but runs xc in the fall, and is good at it. In fact he is a better runner than lacrosse player, but he loves the game. He runs a handful of times in the summer, 1-3 at most as he is on a club team. To be honest I'm lucky if he runs even that. But when the season starts he is there every day and works hard. Last year as a frosh he ran 16:32 for our xc state meet in CA at Woodward Park. Anyways, maybe he'll be won over, maybe not. He plays on Varsity and they are winning so I can only imagine it will be even harder now. But my question is, how do I train this kid? Doing the usual aerobic development and tempos is key in our program but because I only get him 3 months so long term development means nothing. Should we keep him focused on just doing the miles, more on intervals because there is no long term development anyways? Any thoughts? |

Just throw him in with the rest of the team. He will be able to consistently progress at about the same rate during the season and will run the same times year after year, barring setbacks and assuming he is done maturing physically (I'm guessing he is, since a freshman lacrosse player on varsity has gotta be decently built). So maybe if he races four times per season and is pretty talented he might run 18:00-17:30-17:00-16:30 or whatever. He might get better year to year if he isn't through puberty yet, but once he stops growing taller, his running times will stop getting faster automatically. Don't worry too much about development, etc. Just let him work hard and maybe he'll realize he's a better runner than lacrosse player. Who knows... |

umm a kid who only runs Aug-Nov will still pr each year. Lacrosse will keep him in shape and even advance his running fitness, though not as much as running. A kid could do nothing after Nov, just run xc, and still pr every year. To the coach, have him build up slowly, especially in Aug and September. You're lucky in that CA has a longer season than most states. Let him know he'd have a lot of potential in distance/middle distance and maybe he'll enjoy pr'ing enough that he'll stick around for track. CA's demphasis on the indoor season doesn't really help there. |
