This is a good discussion about culture norms. Americans tend to have "ME-ME-ME" mentality or "Me Monster" complex. French parents would have laughed at this article because they don't expect to hover the kids every time something bad happened to them. They just expect their kids to "deal with it".

Maybe these fans who caught the ball are french?

Why on Earth would irritating crying children receive special treatment?

As far as laws of Operant Conditioning go, if they had actually given the ball to the child throwing the temper tantrum, they would simply have provided him positive reinforcement and encouraged him to cry and whine every time he wanted something.

"Americans tend to have "ME-ME-ME" mentality ...."

I think you need to be more specific. I don't think Americans, in general, are this way. It's more the young Twitter/Facebook/I have my rights generation.

Wow, people seem to be arguing the hell out of this.

I don't think the couple should have given the kid the ball BECAUSE he was crying... rather that it would obviously make the kid's year to get a ball. He would keep it on his shelf and worship the damn thing until he was 14 and discovered girls.

That couple will probably leave it in the trunk of their Audi A6 until it is thrown out next week when it is sent off to be cleaned.

Plus, it is quite obvious that they felt bad about it based on their body language. The man is a puss and turns to his right to avoid making eyes with the dad and mom.

Let's also not forget that the kid is very young. Too young to be taught a lesson at a professional baseball game.

Plus, the couple is just annoying. You can tell they bought their hat/shirts at the store in the stadium 10 minutes before the game started.

A nice guy would hand the ball to the kid. Not because he should, but because the ball means so much more to the kid. It is a good thing to do.

If you're trying to establish relevance with the article, I think you might want to take another look at the couple who are actually being accused of being "selfish".

They both appear to be in their early-mid forties (or at least the man does considering his hair)

poor parenting = spoiled brat. crying kids who don't get what they want are a sad fact-of-nature.

Kid is 2, maybe 3 years old. Have you ever met a 2 year old? They are 2.

What is with all of these people who expect a 2 year old to behave like an adult? You do not reason with a 2 year old. They are too young. They don't understand the concept of not crying. They are fvcking 2 years old.

The ignorance is astounding.

Fantastic. The boy is 2 years old and he cries. But the real question is why on Earth anyone would GIVE anything to a 2 year-old for crying.

Sure, you say that nobody should expect a 2 year old to behave like an adult, but that doesn't mean that he/she shouldn't be ENCOURAGED to behave like an adult.

If the 2-year-old cries and you give him the ball, he'll cry again and again and again whenever he wants something. If the 2-year-old cries and you DON'T give him the ball, eventually he'll stop crying whenever he wants something, which is the appropriate course of action.

In the contest between douchebag adults vs. spoiled brat, I really don't want to have to choose sides.

However, speaking as a dad, if you give a toddler what he wants every time he pitches a fit you aren't doing the kid any favors, so I come down on the side of the douchebags and the kid learning that just because he wants something doesn't mean he is entitled to it.

Because this is a baseball game and the kid deserves the ball, that is why. If you buy your 2 year old an ice cream cone and he accidentally drops it, you get him another one. You don't tell him, "see, you learned a lesson today. Hold on to your ice cream."

There are times to teach lessons and times to indulge. A kid's first baseball game is a time to indulge.

Plus, it isn't up to the ball-catchers to teach the child a lesson. For all we know, the kid's dad is trying to explain that not everyone catches a ball every game. The ball-catching couple should give the kid the ball because he is a kid, exclusively.

Forget the crying.

As a parting cheap shot, I'll just say that ball isn't the first one that lady has been photographed holding, if you get my drift. The plastic surgery on her face is telling.

Pretty sure everyone here is just jealous that they can try all their lives to catch a fly ball and it would never happen, but these people did it and they don't even care that much about baseball. They don't owe anyone anything and you can cry all you want but they are not listening

I'd bet my lunch you're not a dad.

If you were a dad, you'd appreciate this being a kid at his first baseball game (likely).

They might not be listening, but that is because they are obviously terrible, self-indulgent narcissists.

Also, no adult should care about catching a foul ball. That is why this is so interesting. Give the fracking ball to the kid.
