Anyone else think Doug Martsch is probably an ass? I mean, I love Built to Spill but I just have the feeling that he is an arrogant jerk. I hope I am wrong. |

I've wondered this same thing, as I'm a BTS obsessive. I met him in NYC pre-show a few years back and tried to engage in small talk. He didn't show much of a personality, but he had no problem signing my ticket stub and thanking me for showing up. I've always thought of him as more of a workman on stage, it's straight business. He rarely says anything between songs, save a curt "thanks." i always pictured him as the reclusive/shy hipster type guy. he kinds of gives that off at shows with how he just plows through their music, not saying much or letting people's enjoyment of his music go to his head. it's almost like he doesn't want to be up there. perhaps that was just the one particular show that i saw him at - who knows. also, it was funny reading that article and him hating on his early stuff. i like that much better than the recent stuff. |

Probably. Can't expect everybody to be nice. I figure he's just a guy that loves to play music for a living, and doesn't care too much about his image. |

He may be arrogant, I don't know about that, but he's not a jerk. I have heard nice things from a friend who has met him. I think a lot of people base their opinions of musicians' personalities on watching them set up their gear before a show in a small venue (how they signal to the sound guy, etc). I never got the impression that Martsch was a jerk from that, though. |

He tries way too hard to be blue collar. I've seen them play a few times and he strikes me as the type of guy who is uber Liberal and mad about everything. Most of the band seem the same way. I am a huge fan, though, so whatever. The interview was interesting, but he is probably one of those guys who acts way too nice to any woman who acknowledges his existence. |

I met him after a show a couple years back. He was friendly enough, though he wasn't the most outgoing person in the world. Is that enough to say he's not an ass? Probably not. I didn't get that vibe from him, though. |

Sounds like he is probably just quiet. I saw BTS at Cat's Cradle in Chapel Hill and he wore a red shirt with just a picture of Kurt Vonnegut's face on the front, so he definitely has a sense of humor. |
