Anyone know any truly great minimalist running shoes for both roads and for trails?

Inov-8 is your best bet-- look into the 195s, 220s, 230s, which are around 7-8 ounces. I've actually worn the 195s and 230s for marathons. There's also the newer Terrafly 277s (women's)/303s, which is a versatile road-trail trainer. Inov-8 does a really good job of maintaining a minimalist feel with all of their shoes. I have shoes across the spectrum, and they're all generally flexible, low-heeled, and move well with the feet. The biggest variations are in the amount of grip.

New balance mt10 and new balance mt110. They both weigh about 7 ounces per shoe. The mt10's just have a thin vibram outsole and the mt110's have a full rock plate. The mt00's are 0 drop with a vibram outsole and weigh about 4 oz a piece but i hated the upper and the way they looked. Brooks Pure Project series are some fine road shoes. The new balance road shoes i have tried leave something to be desired. Another poster mentioned inov8. I have tried these but didn't like how long the toe on the shoes were for the trails as its easier to get caught in roots on technical trails but you could do worse as this is my only complaint with them.

I had to go down 1/2 a size, and this has worked on every pair I've gotten. I agree-- a little long, but when you get in the right size they are a very nimble and perfect shoe, going from roads to trails.

I would have tried that but my feet are too wide to downsize.
