Trying to train while dealing with a personal crisis? 4/24/2012 11:37AM Reply | Return to Index | Report Post
What is the etiquette when running for a university team? Say my brother was just paralyzed from the neck down in a car accident or my dad died or something like that. (I give those examples so as not to reveal my identity, but what I'm dealing with is similar in mental and emotional strain). I have three weeks of track left, but I'm finding it difficult to even begin workouts and cannot find the usual killer instinct when racing. I really just feel like going off and running through the woods for a while...

Should I say something to my coach? I don't want to make excuses... I'm just having a tough time with my personal life right now. Anyone been there?

I have not been in your shoes, but if I were you, I would do what allows you to properly tend to your personal concerns.

It is hard to train properly when the heart is so heavy. It makes the ability of the heart to properly respond to the training less than if the situation had not happened. I suggest you talk to the coach. Stress could hurt you in the long term.

OP, it's impossible to leave that stuff at the gate when you step onto the track. There's no doubt about it. It'll affect your training and racing.

I'd say take care of yourself first. Remember, running is a hobby, an activity; it's part of who you are, NOT who you are. And if your particular situation is such that others are affected as much or more than you, consider them in your plans as well (like if someone did die, maybe take a week to visit family or something...). You'll never regret erring on the side of compassion.

I'm a senior, but it is unlikely I will score at conference (I came back from mono this spring and haven't been running well). I might be 7th or 8th if lucky, but probably more like 12-15th. Conference is the weekend AFTER graduation, and I'd really like to just call it a season/career and go spend time with my family member (who is dying and only has a few months to live). What is your advice in this situation? I am on scholarship so I feel I have a duty to the team, but I don't think I will contribute anyway, and I would much rather spend time with family. What would you do?

When your classes are done you should definately be with your family. You need to consider your future regrets. I diubt you will look back and think..."dang i wish i would have stayed for just one more meet." There are certainly things more important in life than running. If your coach is any kind of a human he will understand, and so will your teammates. I am sure your family member would want you to finish school though. My condolences.

I would meet with your coach 1 on 1 in his/her office to discuss this. I would also go to the health services office at your school and see if you can see a counselor. See how all that works out first. Then make a decision.
heres the deal yo

yeah man, do what you gotta do. sometimes running helps make it easier to handle, sometimes it just adds to the stress. i had to take a semester off from school and running for a similar situation. it was totally worth it and i dont regret my decision.

Talk to the coach, and say exactly what you said here.

Regardless of what he says, do as you said you would like to do, call it a season and spend the time with your family.

Sounds like you should take off and run through the woods for a while. The mental aspect of running and training is as important as the physical. When you're hurt you do what you need to to get healthy. There's no difference when you're mentally and emotionally "injured". Do whatever you need to to get healthy (not to say it's as straightforward as when physically hurt).

I hope you get through this as well as you can.

Didn't see your second post. I'd say do whatever you have to in order to fulfill you family responsibilities, being sure you aren't going to look back regretting how you spent your time.

You gotta talk to you coach. So he doesn't think you're bailing/having senioritis/anything stupid. If your coach is a good person they will understand. I am sorry about your situation. From dealing with personal issues myself while training, you have to deal with the problem before your running returns to normal.

About having a scholarship, since it is an emergency, i feel that you should not feel bad. If somebody close to you was not dying, you would have ran well and done your duty. but this is happening, and life, at the end of the day, is greater than family.
