Hemoglobin/blood test question 4/24/2012 10:31AM Reply | Return to Index | Report Post
I got recent blood test that showed I had a hemoglobin of 11.0 and a ferritin of 24.I have been feeling kind of crappy lately and was wondering if these numbers are low enough to affect my running? I have been tested a few times before and have seen hemoglobin values in the 12.5 to 13 range. I'm a male.

I assume from your screen name that you are male, or a very cool female. How old are you?

Adult male normal values are 14-18, and after middle age, normals are about 12.5 to 15, so you are certainly at least a little low. If you are a trained runner we would also expect this number to be on the upper end of normal. Normal Ferritin levels range from 12-300ng/dl. Your 24 then is normal unless you are talking about hematocrit and then its 42-54% for normal values. Your hemoglobin counts indicate you are anemic. Could be nutritional, from folate, B12, or iron deficiency. Could also be from internal bleeding, even as with an ulcer, among other things, or could be foot strike anemia. I would talk to you doctor to get it further figured out.
