okay heres my story. After track im going to take a 14 day break and start my base training for cross country (incoming junior)and really want to increase my natural foot speed. I run about 50miles a week and will get up to 60 in my base. Well my question iss how would i train to improve my footspeed while in base and not affecting my running performance any. I currently run a 55.2 400 and a 2:03 800....... my goal for the 400 is to run a 51 and really bring down my 800 for next year. Thanks! |

You can't increase natural foot speed. That is like asking how can you get more talent. But, you can make the most of your natural foot speed. I recommend doing strides for that to improve turnover and making your stride more efficient. If you do tough stuff like 400m repeats you will just burn yourself out, so stick with strides in the base phase. |

Try telling that to Terrence Mahon. Went to one of his presentations and even he has Deena Kastor doing flying 30s & 40s once every micro-cycle. That said, doing it in base-phase doesn't make much sense. Short hill striders would be your best bet. I wouldn't worry about speed training so early in your season. |

Don't ever believe that crap. Of course, you can improve your leg speed. |

You should try to be improving your foot speed now during the end of track season. Why wait until after track when this is the perfect time to practice speed. |
