Very few. Usually the ones that do are 8:50 3200 runners in high school. In 1986 Harry Green a 9:15 runner ran 28:55 at Penn and Terrence Mahone ran the the same time as a freshman and I don't think he was much faster in high school.

What about Diego Estrada? He ran a 9:04 3200m his senior year and ran 13:47 5km, and a 28:40 10km his freshman outdoor season

He is good example and very rare. Usually you improved great as a freshman at that level if you can go through 3200 at your high school pr pace and hold that through 5000 as a college freshman, which to break 14:00 means 9:00 as a high school 3200 runner. Estrada almost did that for 10k and Green and Mahon did even better from their slower high school pr.s.

How many false freshmen break 14 and 29?

What do they need to run a full mile in?

Tell us about their foot speed.

True freshman and full mile mean a lot when you are into stats. Why do people not understand this?

Marc Davis ran 13:32 as a redshirt freshman. Meaning two years after he graduated high school. Prefontaine and Sanchez from Gergetown ran 13:37-9 as true freshman, meaning they ran that their first year out of high school. Ritz ran faster as a true freshman but not a Junior record. Keep up.

Assuming average improvement, about 8:50 for 3200 should do the trick.

14:20 5k -> 14:00 5k is about "average" improvement (unless they're nearing their ceiling) IMO ... right around 2.5%

14:20 5k ~ 8:51 3200m.

29:00 for 10k is slightly better than 14:00 5k, so it might take a slightly faster kid out of HS to hit that mark... somewhere in the high 8:40's, unless they are more 10k types than 3k/5k.

There are some every year over here, with usually at least one or two having done it in H.S. I count three guys last year, two of them identical twins, with another dozen or so having broken either 14 or 29.

In other words, a freshman. No reason to add 'true.'

I didn't realize Green ran 9:15 as a prep. I remember when he seemingly came out of nowhere and was profiled in T&F News after that performance (think it was 28:56). He improved steadily through college but didn't do much after. Does anyone know what his training was like in those early years and why he disappeared? He must've been plowing the miles. These guys are rare indeed.

Lutz's 14:00 is a good sign but I feel like he isnt matching what I expected him to hit after his xc season. Am I being too hard or is there more to come this season?

No. Because that can still be ambiguous. A freshman that did not redshirt and a freshman that did redshirt still have the exact same eligibility standing in they eyes of the NCAA and fans. The OP clearly wanted to find people who ran those times the year after they left high school. Online forum trolling is hardly flattering and giving people a hard time who are trying to find information and have an intelligent conversation about track is uncalled for and unnecessary. There are plenty of threads on this website where you can go be a troll, please keep them out of the ones that actually talk about track.

Lutz was injured for most of indoor so I believe he is just getting started. I would doubt that 14:00 would be his best performance this season.
