Does this sound like a calcaneal stress fracture? 4/22/2012 7:46AM Reply | Return to Index | Report Post
For the last 2 months or so I have had a bit of an ache/soreness at the back right part of my right heel. It hasn't affected my running at all, and in the last month or so I have run PB's left right and centre. I haven't felt the soreness at all when I race, or train. It's only when I apply heavy pressure on that part of my heel do I notice it a lot. If I was to stand on my right heel for example I would notice it very clearly. When I push into the calcaneal bone I can feel it. But I don't feel it at all when walking, standing etc. It's clearly very minor but it is annoying and hasn't gone away. It's just lingered. The track season is over now so I kind of want to get rid of whatever the hell this is now, before I start heavy training for next season. I'll be doing more intense training next year as I try to get my 400 time down further, so I want to start off the training cycle with no niggles from the season before hanging over me. At the same time I don't want to waste loads of money on doctors etc for something that seems very minor and hasn't stopped me running very well in recent months. Any idea what this is and how to get rid of it?

Dude, any idea how cheap an office visit to see a doctor is? Like 100-150 dollars. If you already pay for insurance, just your copay of 10-30 dollars. Insurance almost always covers your X-rays but if you had to pay out of pocket its only about 30-40 dollars. How much is your health worth? Is it worth 30-200 dollars? That's a few nights going out.

How much would not running for 2 months or getting an MRI cost you? A lot more. Go see somebody if its really that bad.

Does it pass the squeeze test? Hold either side of the heel bone and squeeze. If that replicates the pain, it's probably a fracture (or stress reaction, since you have no pain while running).

Other possibilities are PF and calcaneal bursitis. From what I understand, the squeeze test is a good way to differentiate if it's a fracture.
