So I live in Durango, CO (about 17k people). Beautiful town, friendly people overall, but the police force is absolutely out of control. Durango is having some pretty bad budget problems right now, and the PD has been facing cut-backs/layoffs for some time. I was at City Hall the other day and spoke to a woman who was a long-time employee of the Durango PD. She informed me that the local cops have the authority to pull people over for anything, issue tickets for anything, etc. Long story short, the city desperately needs money. I went 6 years only getting pulled over once for a minor traffic infraction. I've lived in Durango for 8 months now, and I've been pulled over SEVEN times, for anything and everything minor you can imagine. I am most definitely not alone on this. You have to look over your shoulder at every intersection, every stop sign, every country road.
Combine this with the fact that the Durango PD has had some pretty bad misconduct going on, and you can see why this town hates the cops. Just in the past 2-3 years alone, cops have been fired for spousal abuse, domestic assault on a business owner, and statutory rape. These are only the things that have made it to the public. The tension has really come to a head around here. Last year on Halloween, a long tradition called the Zombie March ended in a full scale riot when the police went in and tried to break it up for some reason or another. That has never happened before, and ended up with several college students getting injured from tear gas and beatings from the cops.
I have honestly never seen anything like this, and I've traveled to small towns in every corner of the country. The only place I've heard that resembles Durango is Lake Havasu City, AZ in terms of aggressive police force.
Now that I'm done venting........has anybody dealt with anything like this?
