I am the "never was" running a 1500m on Saturday. It has been about 3 years since I last ran a 1500 - although I have run a few road races recently. The story is roughly thus: I took a job after graduation and ran 2-3 times a week for the next two years. I began to miss competing and I began to get bored sitting behind a desk. So I started running daily at lunch about 8 months ago. I made it my goal to run 4:00 for 1500m. Mostly I've been doing tempos (6-7 miles) and fartleks, because whenever I get on the track to do stuff much faster than 72s I get really sore.... So 10 days out from Saturday (last Wednesday...so I could recover) I did a final tune up on the track. Two Miles at 10:22 (5:13, 5:09) followed by 5 minutes jog recovery and then into: 600 in 1:32 (1:30 recovery), 400 in 1:02 (1:30 recovery), 200 in 30. Question is: Can I break 4:00 in the 1500 this saturday? I feel some good ol' letsrun ridicule will get me fired up so let's hear it. |

Hmm... I think we need some more information. What's your 1500m PB? What were the results of your recent road races? If I had to guess based only on what you've already posted, I'd say that you won't break four, but you might be close. But I also hope that you make it! |

No. you will hit two laps and be done. you can't break 30 seconds for 200m and you think 4:00 is in range? Not gonna happen. |

I think you'll break 4:00. That 600 is moving. |

Here's some more information that might help: I ran 3:49 in college. I was not a very good 800m (1:54 pb) runner in college. I never ran a 5000m in college, but I daresay that I would not have been particularly adept at the distance. In my recent road races I have run 48:53 for a 15k and 15:26 for 5k. I was pretty toast after the 15k, but the 5k felt relatively controlled. I ran very even splits for both races. And - if it helps - I am pretty sure I can run under 30s for 200m... Personally, I think I will be very close to the mark. I don't think I'm as "fit" as I was the first time I ever broke 4:00, but I'm hoping some residual fitness comes through for me. I'll definitely come back and post my final time. |

I think you're going to be very close. I hope it goes well - can't wait to hear about it. |

You probably won't if you doubt yourself so much that you need the reassurance of others to even attempt to break 4:00. So no, I don't think you can. |

64s for 1500m. pretty tough. you can get 4:03 to 4:04 this time out, then break it the next time. |

The verdict: 4:01 The race got out a bit slow - 66 high for the first 400 and 2:12 for 800. Closed in :45 for the final 300m. I'm pretty ok with the result and now I know I can be a little more aggressive next time out. Thanks for the predictions - I didn't want to go out and get over my head in the first 800m only to do the cripple walk down the last 300m and run 4:15 or something. |
