Will Sam Chelanga run the 10k at the Trials? 4/16/2012 7:32PM Reply | Return to Index | Report Post
His Flotrack interview that was posted today hinted at the possibility, but it sounds like it will be contingent on him receiving his USA citizenship in time. I'm not all that familiar with the rules that are associated with gaining citizenship, so I was wondering if anyone has any clue as to what his chances are of getting his citizenship in time to run the trials this year.

I would say the chances are definitely less than 50%; Sammy and his situation will not hold a lot of sway with the US Dept on Imigration and Naturalization. Lagat and KK had more compeling stories than Sammy and they did not bend the rules for them. The best route is to get someone like a Congressman to lobby on his behalf. With that said, it can happen, I do know of a few cases that got fasttracked, but they had a lot of people working on their behalf.

Nope, you aren't allowed to compete for a country in the Olympics if you are still a citizen of a different country

Oh wait........

Ed Moran, Scotty Bauhs, Bobby Curtis, and Tim Nelson are all praying that Chelanga doesn't get citizenship in time.

^If Chelanga is in the kind of shape he was in at Payton Jordan in 2010, you can even throw Ritz in there. There aren't many Americans that can run stride for stride with a 27:08 10000 runner....

Based on the NYC Half I'd say that's a pretty safe statement.
