Was browsing on USC athletics website to see what times are needed for a potential recruit. I saw they had no cross country program, and was baffled that they didn't have one (but they have a club team). I checked their track roster and saw they have exactly three listed. Do they and would they still give scholarships for good distance runners? |

Which USC? Or do you mean both, because the Gamecocks fit that bill. |

Seko spent only 1 semester at USC but learned enough about distance running to go onto win 10 marathon majors in a row plus he never missed a drug test of feigned injury to dodge the dope testers. |

bias alert: i'm a bruin alumnus, and yes, i know our distance program has taken its fair share of criticism--some justified, some not--over the years, but... despite some talented distance runners and some incredible track history, 'sc has very little distance running tradition. amazingly, they just had their first sub-4 miler in school history over the last couple of years. that said, i've heard good things about their coach, but i can't imagine why a male blue-chip recruit would want to go there without a men's cross country program. also, you've got to drive somewhere, braving traffic in every direction, to get to any area worth running in, unless you want to brave bullets (look up bryshon nellum). as far i can remember, they depend mostly on foreign recruits (who i assume are getting scholarship money) for their track distance events... |

Southern Cal is not a place for a distance runner. You'll miss the team aspect and cross country. If running is a priority, stay away. Lots of people love the school, but if running is a priority, there are other fish in the sea. A bit of a shame, really. |

the former AD at So Cal went to Columbia and dismantled that distance program as well. Guess he didn't like XC |

Things for the input all. The reason I'm asking is that I am a junior at the moment and am interested in them for primarily academic reasons. |

I believe that USC doesn't have men's cross country because of Title IX. It was defunded about 10 or 15 years ago when I was in college. The men haven't had much success in longer distances above 1500 meters but they are pretty strong in middle distances. They also have seperate coaches for men and women. The women have had more success over the years and are better coached. But I think you said you were a guy so that doesn't effect you. Don't be afraid to look at DII or DIII schools in the San Diego area. You will be surprised by how competitive they are. |

Stay the eff out of USD or Pt Loma. They make you take hate classes to graduate. Yuck. |

People who bitch about Title IX at USC should be reminded that USC Admissions roadblocks qualified Asian freshman to 30% of the incoming class to keep the campus as white as possible. UCLA does not. So what goes around comes around ;-) Eat shit and die. |

USC isn't the only school with dicriminatory racial quotas designed to preserve Caucasian student enrollment. USC has limits of 30% Asians, while Stanford, Yale, Princeton limit Asians to 20%. USC used to be 20% but upped the quota years ago. The UC system is barred from law from using race and has up to 70% Asians. The UC system profiles high schools and adjusts GPA, SAT, etc. numbers based on the profile.

Seriously, San Diego Runnah..you got to be kidding about SD DII and DII schools. USD only has XC, no track and field and no track literally, PLNU has an amazing track that overlooks the Pacific Ocean..but they just dropped their TF/XC program. UCSD a possibility, good running trails on campus in a small eucalyptus grove, but they are still reeling from the wrong way fiasco at the DII regional XC race a few years back. SDSU women only, no men since Matt Clayton/Greame Fell et al left in the 80's. SDSU knows it cant compete with BYU in the distances, so it gives all scholarship $$ to sprinter/jumpers/hurdlers/vaulters and hopes for 2 pts in the 800. Even though it is a great facility, no SD HS in their right mind with send a female blue chipper to SDSU. That leaves the best distance program in SD at Mesa college. Thom Hunt has done wonders at the JC level in SD, sending many JCers off to great careers at the DI level. I send my kids to Thom or out of town... |

Basically, I have one relevant question for me. Do they still recruit distance runners? |

They don't really recruit distance runners. I don't know about academics, but Cal State San Marcos is going from NAIA to DII next year. |
