This is going to be my new quote for the 2012 track season. I think we all want to see him succeed- join me on my quest to support Americas most talented runner.

I was still believing before it was cool to be still believing.

I've never stopped believing. I simply thought I would capitalize on all these fare-weather fans and give him a little support.

3:46; 8:11; 13:10; 27:34; 29 years old--how anyone can doubt he might return to greatness is more than a bit too cynical.

He hasn't run a world class time in 5 years and he's almost 30. I'd say doubting that he can "return to greatness" is an appropriate amount of cynicism. And let's face it, there really is no "greatness" to return to. Sure he has the AR in the mile, but the only big international race he's ever won was that Diamond League 1500 in Paris in 2007. And he has ZERO medals.

And the latest result that fan boys somehow find promising is the fact that he ALMOST ran the equivalent of a sub-4 mile, placing 4th against scrubs at a college meet. Give me a break.

Up until this year I was still on the Webb bandwagon. But enough is enough. I don't dislike the guy (why would I?) and if he did start running well again that would be awesome. But enough with the excuses and delusions. In all likelihood the kid is done.

I believe that he can run 3:35 or so this year. That means jack sh*t on the international stage.

Ivy League trustfund babies can run faster than webb did
My question is will he even get the B standard for the US OG Trials?

He's done. He'll improve, but not quite to the elite level. He's a speed based runner and like most sprinters, a sharp decline happens at his current age. Injury history (scar tissue) and high intensity training just don't mix.
The mile is 50% aerobic and 50% anaerobic/speed. His 800 times suggest his speed has greatly diminished. Also being out kicked by a bunch of no names suggest that 47 point 400 speed he had in his school is gone.
If Webb buys into being a skinny distance runner, then he can try to move up in distance. But does he really want to give up lifting weights and do 15 to 20 mile long runs, doesn't seem like it since he left AlSal partly for that reason.

Alan Webb NEVER had 47 point speed at ANY time in his running career. That was a product of itchy timers who incorrectly measured a relay split wanting to hype up his reputation. His speed was more like mid to high 49s in high school and mid to low 48s in the pros.

"MICK: What were your personal best times each year?
ALAN: 400m: grade (9)-54, (10)-49.8,(11)-48.4,(12)-47.4
800m: grade (9)-1:56,(10)-1:51.9,(11)-1:50,(12)-1:47.74
Mile: grade(4)-7:03,(5)-6:10,(6)-5:44,(7)-5:20,(8)-4:52,(9)-4:24 (10)-4:06.94,(11)-4:03.33,(12)-3:53.43
2-mile: grade (9)-9:34,(10)-9:10,(11)-8:59.9,(12)-8:45"

I guess Alan Webb lies about his times in interviews.

How many people here actually believe he can still be elite?
And obviously, how many people believe he is done and will no longer be competitive on the world stage?

"How many people here actually believe he can still be elite?"

Me. The Janet Evans, Lance Armstrongs and over 40 athletes are proof. What Webbs under 30, so yes he still can achieve if he sets his mind (pain-threshold raising that) to it.
