HG: In Kenya, sport is very important at schools, because of the English school system. That gives them some advantage. It is only a lack of depth in running in Ethiopia, because of lack of sports in the school system.
Interesting that you dug this old post up of me fluffing my interview with Haile. Two years old. But he makes a good point. England was such great running country, because it was a part of the culture of growing up there. I know in the 70s, we had former English soccer and cross-country coaches at school (Victoria, BC) - it just seemed like it was the English people's sport. Now of course it just seems to be the East African's.
The point is, when it is a part of the education system and perhaps culture, there is an opportunity for excellence.
