Best headphones for running without totally breaking the bank? 4/13/2012 4:12PM Reply | Return to Index | Report Post
Can anyone recommend to me a good pair of sports headphones that stays in the ear well, doesn't stop working when exposed to sweat, and has at least decent sound? I do most of my training without music, but I tend to bring an mp3 player along maybe twice a week and my current headphones suck. I'm looking to spend somewhere under $75 or so unless there's something truly incredible for a little more. I've heard good things about Sennheiser's sports line, but their stuff is typically pretty pricey and I want to be sure they're going to work well before I buy, so can anyone comment on that?

Bump! This is already almost off the front page! Someone tell me what to buy so I don't have to make any decisions myself!

Grados are great as far as sound quality goes, but their construction is a little too delicate to waste as running headphones. Finding the best running earbuds/headphones is going to be trial-and-error. Some are theoretically great, but they just don't fit well for you, etc etc.

I prefer earbuds, myself. My key factors are:
* decent sound (doesn't have to be great)
* sweat-resistant design
* really tough construction (so they last) and/or low price (so you can replace them as necessary)
* an aperture that is wide enough that it won't clog with sweat and block all noise until you clear it
* a cord that isn't too long
* no in-line volume control or mic (just gets annoying with the extra weight knocking around, and can fritz out the headphones if drenched in sweat)

So far, the best I've found are the sennheiser basic sport earbuds:

Warning: the sound quality of these are not even in the zip code of Grados, but still decent.

I'm really digging this Philips pair right now: www.amazon.com/Philips-ActionFit-SHQ1000-28-Headphones/dp/B004477D00/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1334358915&sr=8-2

I don't know how the sound compares to the Sennheiser ones, but they're only $14. My ears are weirdly shaped, and these are the few ones that actually fit comfortable and don't fall out.

If your ears are shaped normally and you can wear like your average iPod ones etc, then just pick up like 5 pairs that are 5-10 bucks a pop.
I get like 1-2 months out of them, but i wear them ~5x a week and about 5 hours a day lounging around etc.
When they break, open up the next pair.

Behind the ear ones are by far the best for securing them to your head. However, I have found that although the Apple basic white earbuds tend to work well enough that I use them without much complaint... but I wouldn't go anywhere near the 75 dollar range because no matter how well they are constructed, the nature of using them while you run (conceivably outside in sometimes bad weather) will inevitably destroy them. Keep to around 20 dollars and you might sacrifice audio quality but your running so who cares? Buy an expensive pair for when you are not running and they will last much, much, much longer.

Those went with me 7 days a week for an entire summer of 80-100 mile weeks. They never died, someone stole them...

I just wear the crappy JVC Gumy headphones. They stay in my ear well and last about 6 months for 7 bucks. Sound quality is good enough for running for me

I am using the Bose® IE2 audio headphones for 3 years now.
They are above you budjet ($99) but I've been using the daily and the never fall out of my ears (even on intense workouts), sweat is not a problem for them, and sound quality is AMAZING.

These kind work best for me:

http://store.sony.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/ProductDisplay?catalogId=10551&storeId=10151&productId=8198552921665376501&langId=-1&XID=O:mdrg45lp:dg_gglsrch:pla&cagpspn=pla

I've never had them die from sweat. They usually die from the conductors breaking inside near the strain relief on the plug from constant bouncing around. Still, I can get a good couple of years out of a pair.

Here is the ONLY way to listen to your tunes when running.

Buy a pair of Koss UR/10 headphones and wrap the cord around the headphone. Plug in an ipod shuffle and clip it to the headphones. You can now listen to hours of music without any dangling cords or getting your ipod wet or sweaty. I came up with this idea after running a 5k when it was 96° and having to wear a shirt so the cord didn't flap all over the place while I was running. Of course listening to music was more important than staying a little cooler but I found a way I could do both. Not that hot to wear in the summer and keeps my ears warmer in the cool weather.

I buy them at Menards for about 10 bucks and they last 6 months to a year.

You're most welcome. They're cheap, stick to your ear and inside it, comfortable and have good sound. Can't believe I'm the first to post them!
